Blair, Schwarzenegger discuss climate

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

LONDON (AP) ? California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger praised Tony Blair for tackling climate change and said his own state could show the U.S. government that it can address environmental issues without damaging the economy.

Schwarzenegger, who traveled to London on the outgoing prime minister's last full day in office Tuesday, said that during a decade in power Blair has "proven to the world that you can do both ... protect the Earth and protect the economy."

Last July, Blair traveled to California so that Britain and California could form a partnership to address global warming, bypassing the Bush administration to explore ways to curb greenhouse gas emissions and promote clean-burning fuels.

Hip travelers to have a cool place to land

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

There's a new hotel coming to town, designed for the kind of hipsters like those who frequent the Jupiter Hotel on East Burnside, the Inn at Northrup Station in Northwest and the Lucia on Southwest Broadway.

This one will be near the Portland International Airport, in the complex where an Ikea is scheduled to open next month. Not an area where you'd expect people with subtle tattoos and designer eyeglasses.

"It will be new, sassy and smart," said Harold Pollin, developer of the aloft Portland, a $12 million, 136-room hotel scheduled to open in July 2008. "It's a departure from the usual airport hotel, built for Gen Y, Gen X, new high-tech management types."

MLSD board hears construction update

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

MANCHESTER - On June 13, the Manchester Local School District board of education heard an update on the district's construction project, created a new administrative position and accepted the district's 2005-06 fiscal year audit report from Ohio Auditor of State Mary Taylor's office.

The school district is in the process of constructing a new elementary building attached to the present high school, along with completing renovations to the high school. Site work started in May, 2006, and the expected completion of the new elementary is fall, 2008.

The construction project manager, Scott Kirk, discussed the current activity at the construction site. According to Kirk, Sidewinder Electric Co., Inc. was installing cable trays in the high school. At the new elementary site, the block layers were starting the west gym wall, and the roof line was close to completion in the two-story academic wing. Beginning the week of June 18, workers are scheduled to start setting the roof on the elementary.

TVS expecting high marks

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

Rick Brownlee, outgoing superintendent of the Twin Valley Local Community School District, presented members of the Board of Education with impending good news at the Monday, June 18, regular meeting.

In his comments to the board, Brownlee reported the school district "may" receive a 24 out of a possible 30 and an "effective" rating when the Ohio Achievement Test scores are released later this year.

"We have been bogged down the last couple of months with criticism about Nobel Prize-winning literature and other issues. Tonight I am very pleased to announce to the board that the Ohio Achievement Test results came in on Friday (June 15) and our elementary school and middle school have done better than ever before!" said Brownlee, who is retiring at the end of July.

Johnson is released by 'embarrassed' Bears - Los Angeles Times

Tuesday, June 26, 2007

The Chicago Bears, saying that they were "embarrassed" and that Tank Johnson had "compromised the credibility" of the team with his latest incident, released the defensive tackle Monday.

Johnson was waived three days after he was pulled over by police in Arizona. He already had been suspended for the first eight games of the 2007 season for violating probation on a gun charge. He spent two months in jail and was released in May.

"We made it clear to him that he had no room for error," General Manager Jerry Angelo said. "Our goal was to help someone through a difficult period in his life, but the effort needs to come from both sides. It didn't, and we have decided to move on."
