Larry King Lands First Hilton Interview

Sunday, June 24, 2007

LOS ANGELES (AP) - CNN's Larry King has landed the post-jail interview with Paris Hilton that TV networks had sought.

A King spokeswoman says Hilton plans to appear on "Larry King Live" on Wednesday night, a day after she's scheduled to be released from jail. Hilton is expected to be interviewed for the show's "whole hour."

CNN's announcement followed competition for the interview between ABC and NBC that ended Friday with both networks saying they were no longer interested. Both networks were embarrassed by reports that they were willing to pay the Hilton family for materials related to an interview. CBS says it has never pursued the interview. King's spokeswoman says CNN didn't pay for the interview.

Fructose-Sweetened Drinks Tougher on Arteries

Sunday, June 24, 2007

SATURDAY, June 23 (HealthDay News) -- The type of sugar in a sugary drink may impact how healthy -- or unhealthy -- it is for arteries, a new study suggests.

Fructose-sweetened drinks are more likely to provoke the development of fatty artery deposits in overweight adults than glucose-sweetened beverages, researchers say.

Kimber Stanhope, of the University of California at Davis, and colleagues compared the results of drinking fructose-sweetened beverages versus glucose for 10 weeks in overweight and obese adults.

Shuttle astronauts return to Texas

Sunday, June 24, 2007

HOUSTON (AP) - Atlantis' seven astronauts have reunited with their families in Texas.

They're back in Houston after a two-week mission to the international space station that ended in California at Edwards Air Force Base. Bad weather in Florida forced the landing there.

Sunita "Suni" Williams was especially happy to return to Earth after spending more than six months at the space station. Williams said she's trying to get used to gravity. She set an endurance record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman at 195 days, as well as the record for most time spacewalking by a woman.

New Devices Shine a Light on Blood Sugar Control

Sunday, June 24, 2007

SATURDAY, June 23 (HealthDay News) --Two new devices that use light to measure diabetics' blood sugar levels show promise, according to studies to be presented Saturday in Chicago at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association.

Dr. Robert Gabbay of the Penn State University Medical Center in Hershey, Pa., and colleagues tested an "optical coherence tomography device" -- GlucoLight -- on 27 type 1 and type 2 diabetics. The device, which focuses a beam of light on the patient's skin, was accurate in measuring blood sugar levels, the team found.

"The device maintained calibration over four days with no adverse side effects," Gabbay and his colleagues concluded. "Future efforts will evaluate the accuracy of the system in the hypoglycemic range."
