Bush, Putin Share a Break From Tensions

Friday, June 29, 2007

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (AP) -- President Bush's summertime meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Bush family's oceanfront estate is about lobsters, legacies and a break from increasing tensions. Relations between Washington and Moscow are strong, but on the skids, and both Bush and Putin want to massage those relations before leaving office. Putin, bolstered by Russia's economic muscle and popularity at home, has adopted an assertive posture on the world stage. He has bluntly op...

Taser, iRobot team up to arm robots

Friday, June 29, 2007

BOSTON (AP) ? RoboCops and robot soldiers got a little closer to reality Thursday as a maker of floor-cleaning automatons teamed up with a stun-gun manufacturer to arm track-wheeled 'bots for the police and the Pentagon.

By adding Tasers to robots it already makes for the military, iRobot Corp. says it hopes to give soldiers and law enforcement a defensive, non-lethal tool.

Little effort made to find deserters

Friday, June 29, 2007

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) -- There is no crack team of bounty hunters, no elite military unit whose job is to track them down and bring them in. Despite a rise in desertions from the Army as the Iraq war drags on into a fifth year, the U.S. military does almost nothing to find those who flee and rarely prosecutes those it gets its hands on. An Associated Press examination of Pentagon figures shows that 174 troops were court-martialed by the Army last year for desertion - a figure that amounts to...

An Associated Press examination of Pentagon figures shows that 174 troops were court-martialed by the Army last year for desertion -- a figure that amounts to 5% of the 3,301 soldiers who deserted in fiscal year 2006. The figures are about 1% or less for the Navy and the Marines.

Bush cites Israel as model for Iraq

Friday, June 29, 2007

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) President Bush held up Israel as a model for defining success in Iraq, saying Thursday the U.S. goal there is not to eliminate attacks but to enable a democracy that can function despite violence.

With his Iraq policy under increasing criticism from the public and lawmakers in both parties, Bush went to the U.S. Naval War College to declare progress and plead for patience. At the same time, his top national security went to Capitol Hill to hear out Republican critics.

Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, the senior Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, said this week U.S. troops should start leaving now because Bush's strategy will not have time to work.
