Oasis of Hope Church was packed Thursday afternoon as people gathered to honor the memory of DeWayne Rogers, pastor and founder of the Cowboy Church.

Rogers died Sunday in a team roping accident at the Umatilla Sage Riders arena. He was only 61, but had packed a lot of living into those years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, a cowboy and a farrier, and those that knew him will remember his generous spirit.

"There was nothing in the world that DeWayne would not do for you if you asked him," said Skip Jones, a good friend of Rogers. "If he saw you standing there without a shirt and it was cold outside and all he had was a shirt on his back, he'd give it to you."

Last year, actress/rapper Queen Latifah brought ranks of New York schoolgirls to their feet, screaming with glee, as she gave a rousing speech about empowerment; actress Anne Hathaway shone an inspiring light on women in the military. These stars reflect the true situation of American women: High levels of competence, idealism and all-around effectiveness are by now pretty much the norm out there in the land of reality.

But this kind of empowered, right-on female role modeling scarcely registers in the pop culture landscape. There, a young woman sobbing helplessly in the back seat of a police car as she's hauled off to jail is the new Miss America ? the new mass icon of popular fascination.

ROCHESTER HILLS An authentic Mexican restaurant is expected to open in the former Family Buggy Restaurant, which was a popular mainstay in the community for two decades.

The entire South Hill Plaza at 870 S. Rochester Road, where the new Los Cuatro Amigos Inc. will open, is to be remodeled, said Mark Field, a partner in the restaurant business. Officials expect the restaurant will bring in customers for all businesses in the shopping center.

Los Cuatro partners have applied to the Rochester Hills City Council for a liquor license. The Family Buggy, owned by Don Payne from 1983 until it closed last year, did not serve alcoholic beverages.

High gasoline prices might ease the traditional watercraft congestion on Possum Kingdom Lake during the Fourth of July holiday, but the number of people visiting the popular lake should be on par with previous years.

Gayla Chambers, executive director of the Possum Kingdom Chamber of Commerce, said visitation has been good so far this year - even with so much rain - and that is a sign the upcoming holiday and summer months likewise will draw good crowds, too.

"It has been good even with the rainy weather," she said. "It is going to be awesome."
