MOSCOW—A U.S.-funded non-governmental organization that trains journalists has been effectively shut down and its director has left Russia amid criminal prosecution her lawyers said Friday was part of a government campaign against NGOs.
Investigators pounced on a minor infraction committed by Manana Aslamazyan, director of the Educated Media Foundation, using it to shutter the respected media training and development organization and frighten other NGOs and journalists, the lawyers said.
The prosecution of Aslamazyan and pressure on the foundation, which receives funding from the U.S. government, follows repeated claims by President Vladimir Putin and other officials that foreign governments use NGOs to weaken Russia and undermine its leadership.

Jupp Derwall, who coached the West German soccer team to victory in the 1980 European Championship and a second-place finish in the 1982 World Cup after a controversy-laden run to the title game, died Tuesday in St. Ingbert, Germany. He was 80.
His death was announced by the German soccer federation.
Derwall coached West Germany from 1978 to 1984. His teams had a 45-11-11 record, posting a German-record 23 consecutive victories.

MADRID - The threat of terrorism in Europe remains very high due to anger over the Iraqi war and the growing influence of North African groups linked to al-Qaida, a leading antiterrorism judge warned Thursday.
"The actual threat for Europe is high, very high indeed, " Jean-Louis Bruguiere, a top investigator of Islamic terrorism in France, told reporters.
"The Iraqi conflict has nurtured the Islamic groups living in Europe, " he said, adding that Iraq also remains a magnet for the recruitment of Islamic extremists.
