Losing Lymph Nodes to Beat Colon Cancer

Thursday, March 22, 2007

ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Colon cancer patients who have more lymph nodes removed and examined have a better chance of survival, recent research reveals.

"What this research does for the first time is provide a rigorous evaluation of available data," lead author George Chang, M.D., of the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, told Ivanhoe. "It reminds us of the importance of the fundamental principles of colon cancer surgery. Abiding to those principles, both by the surgeon and pathologist, would allow for an optimal evaluation of the lymph nodes and maximize the outcomes."

Lymph nodes filter cancer cells from the lymph. Lymph node extraction thus removes a source for potentially lethal cancer.

Late Basket Sends Air Force to NIT Semis

Thursday, March 22, 2007

— Jacob Burtschi scored 13 points, including the winning basket with 7.7 seconds left to send Air Force to the NIT semifinals with a 52-51 win over DePaul on Wednesday night.

Draelon Burns, who scored 18 points and had five 3-pointers, rimmed out a 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer after Burtschi missed a free throw following his layup, and the usually subdued crowd at Clune Arena stormed the court, their Falcons headed to the NIT Final Four and "New York, New York" playing over the loud speakers.

The Falcons (26-8), top seeded in the West, play South Region top seed Clemson in the semifinals on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden in New York.

CHS chorale is 'magical' in N.Y.

Thursday, March 22, 2007

The Chandler High chorale's second performance in four years at New York's Carnegie Hall was such a success that its director is calling it "a magical moment."

The choir returned Tuesday from its trip to the National High School Choral Festival, where it performed Monday along with choirs from Gilbert Highland; Rexburg, Idaho, and Bentonville, Ark. More than half of the $65,000 cost for the Chandler group came from state tax-credit funds.

During a week in New York City, the choir spent two full days in rehearsals. But its 50 members and entourage also managed to see two musicals, Ellis Island and Ground Zero.

DA in TYC area turned down most cases

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

PECOS, Texas – The prosecutor who for nearly two years took no action on the graphic Texas Rangers report about sexual abuse at a West Texas juvenile prison declined to prosecute the vast majority of felony cases that came before him in that time, according to an Associated Press review of state court filings.

State legislators have accused Randall W. Reynolds, who first won election as prosecutor for Ward, Reeves and Loving counties in 1996, of ignoring a lengthy Texas Rangers report that he received in March 2005 outlining allegations of abuse by two top administrators at the West Texas State School in Pyote, a small Ward County oil town.

That report has blown into a statewide scandal. The board of the Texas Youth Commission resigned and more allegations are emerging every day. The two top administrators at the West Texas State School in Mr. Reynolds's territory – the focus of the Rangers report – have resigned, but they still have not been charged with a crime.

Wall St. rises on M&A

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks rose on Tuesday as a series of takeover deals bolstered investor confidence and offset apprehension about the latest Federal Reserve rate-setting meeting.

Affiliated Computer Services Inc. stock shot up nearly 17 percent after the company received a $5.9 billion buyout bid.

"The fact is, there's so many companies with such low leverage on their balance sheets. In aggregate, so many corporate balance sheets are in such good shape," said Lincoln Anderson, managing director and chief investment officer at LPL Financial Services in Boston. "That's what's driving the buyouts and takeovers."

Witness: Keller yelled 'I'll kill you!'

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

One of the three people Kenneth Keller shot in the face and the back crawled out a bathroom window and got away from him, according to testimony in his capital murder trial Tuesday. He came looking for Oweta Cawood with a sawed-off shotgun, screaming, “Where are you?” while she hid, bleeding, under a pile of boxes in a car, she said.

“He was yelling, ‘I’ll kill you! You better not tell what I done,’” Cawood told jurors in the first day of testimony Tuesday in Denton County’s 211th District Court.

Keller, 44, sat quietly beside his attorneys and seemed unaffected by the testimony. The state is not seeking the death penalty in the case. He could receive up to life in prison for the double murder and aggravated assault charges.

Return to glory?: Gators get back to work

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

GAINESVILLE - The celebrating has barely ended but Florida's football team goes back to work today, trying to rebuild during spring practice from the 41-14 national title win against Ohio State on Jan. 8.

UF lost 22 seniors and a handful of talented juniors who left early for the NFL. The biggest concern? Definitely the defense, where only two starters return. Next fall's team will include only seven seniors.

"We're not a good team," Gators coach Urban Meyer said. "We're a little bit of a train wreck right now. We have seven seniors. That's awful. You can't have (only) seven seniors at the University of Florida. Seven seniors is not what you coach at Florida. And there are only eight juniors. It's not a real positive.

Meyer: Gators must build on success, not rebuild

More than 300 inductees comprise the National High School Sports Hall of Fame, and not a single hockey player among them all. Thats right, not one of the 326 members, who have gained enshrinement since the hall began honoring prolific achievements of high school athletes back in 1982, have a hockey background.

That is, until now, and the class of 2007. The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), which serves as the governing body for the hall, recently released its list of 12 new members to be enshrined this summer in Palm Desert, Cal. Included on that list is Jim Johnson, athletic director and assistant principal at Troy High School, who was lauded for his record-setting play as a member of Cranbrook High Schools hockey team from 1971-74.

On his way out, Braun showcased the same tools that defined his spring: good bat, shaky defense. He hit a three-run homer as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning, then committed his fourth throwing error in the seventh.

Risky behavior in video games could lead to dangerous driving

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

(3/19/07) - The more competitive and adventurous your video game driving skills are, the more likely you are to be in an accident on the real-life road.

This according to a two-part study from Germany, which found that those who engage in risky behavior when playing virtual racing games carry that behavior onto the road, and are at greater risk for accidents and traffic violations.

The research followed men who played either a typical racing game, or a neutral game. Those who played the competitive racing games relied on breaking traffic rules to win -- such as driving on the sidewalk, speeding or crashing into other cars.

DANBURY Danbury ISD trustees on Monday unanimously rejected the appeals of three Danbury High School students who objected to school officials blocking distribution of the school newspaper late last year.

Trustees also voted unanimously that the district policy regarding student publications was not followed with the D-Town Press December issue, which included articles about sexually transmitted diseases, sexual activity among Danbury High students and the consequences of premarital sex, as well as editorials on both sides of the abortion debate.

Alaska Town Giving Away Free Land

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

Anderson, a little town in Alaska's interior, has no gas station, no grocery store and no traffic lights, but it does have plenty of woodsy land and it's free to anyone willing to put down roots in the often-frozen ground.

In a modern twist on the homesteading movement that populated the Plains in the 1800s, the community of 300 people is offering 26 large lots on spruce-covered land in a part of Alaska that has spectacular views of the Northern lights and Mount McKinley, North America's highest peak.

And what's an occasional day of 60-below cold in a town removed from big-city ills?

Oregon bill aims to rid the shopping cart blight

Monday, March 19, 2007

SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- Like a plastic bag caught in a tree branch or a foam beer cooler floating down a river, abandoned shopping carts are usually seen as a blight on the landscape - rusting away in overgrown lots and in ditches across the country. "When you are seeing them in droves, in fives and tens you start to feel like 'Is that our national shrub?'" said Kate Tarter, chairwoman of the Northgate Neighborhood Association in Salem, who once counted more than 30 abandoned shopping carts in a...
