Sun journalists honored with 17 awards

The Sun newspapers took home 16 awards presented at the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors' annual meeting in Ponte Vedra Beach on Friday afternoon.

North Port editor Elaine Allen-Emrich and former staff writer Alyssa Schnugg won a first place in daily deadline reporting for their story on the death of 6-year-old Coralrose Fullwood in September. Schnugg is now working for the Oxford Eagle in Mississippi.

Photographer Kharli Rose won a first-place award in the prestigious "Body of Work" category. "From spot news to feature portraits, she takes daily situations and makes them fresh," judges said of Rose's work. Rose picked up another award with a second place for feature photography.

Local school officials finally received state funding estimates Monday, but they won?t have budgets ready immediately.

After weeks of delays, the Tennessee Department of Education issued local allocation figures for the state?s new school funding formula.

Estimates indicate Sullivan County schools will get $40 million next year ? an extra $3.6 million over this year.

Thunderstorms ravaged the Upstate for the second straight day, leaving about 10,000 homes and businesses in the region without power.

With several poles down, some Duke Energy customers could remain in the dark until 5 p.m. today, said spokeswoman Mary Kathryn Green.

Meteorologists haven?t confirmed any tornadoes, but they plan to inspect sites with unusually high damage in Roebuck and Anderson today, said meteorologist Vince DiCarlo of the National Weather Service in Greer.

Blame financial regulators for the added inconvenience. It's part of an effort to combat identity fraud, which cost the economy a total of $49 billion last year, according to Javelin Strategy & Research.

About 3.7% of U.S. adults were victims of identity fraud in 2006. That percentage was actually down a bit from 2005, perhaps because regulators have required banks to improve online security to make sure you are who you say you are when you log in. And many other financial firms are beefing up their defenses as well. "By the end of the year, the security process will be very different," says Gwenn Bzard, a research director at Aite Group, which studies online security.

First curator of MoNA dies at 88

Barbara Straker James, a notable painter and the first curator of the Museum of Northwest Art, died Thursday in La Conner, Skagit County, at the home she and her husband, the esteemed sculptor Clayton James, had shared since 1953.

She was 88 and had been suffering from Parkinson's disease. It had been less than five years since she retired from her job as chief curator at MoNA.

An early associate of Morris Graves, Guy Anderson and other key figures of Northwest art, Mrs. James quit painting in 1962 but continued to shape this region's art history through her work as a curator and writer. A strong, stoic presence, she was known for her encyclopedic knowledge of the early local art scene, as well as a stubborn streak about what she would — or wouldn't — divulge to others.

SALT LAKE CITY — Authorities said a prison inmate out for a medical appointment wrested a gun from a corrections officer and killed him Monday, then led police on a high-speed chase in a stolen sport utility vehicle before his capture at a fast-food restaurant.

Curtis Allgier, whose wears a swastika and the words "skin head" on his heavily tattooed face, fired a shot in the Arby's that hit no one before a customer at the restaurant grabbed the gun, Salt Lake City police Sgt. Rich Brede said.

"It sounds like he was heroic, even though he's being humble about it," he said of the 59-year-old customer.

Add Andrea Martin, another seasoned comedy pro, to the star-studded cast of the new Mel Brooks musical, "Young Frankenstein."

Tony Award-winner Martin, a regular on television's late, lamented and hilarious sketch-comedy series, "SCTV," and a star of the recent Broadway revival of "Fiddler on the Roof," has signed on to play the scary housekeeper Frau Blucher (a role originated on film by Cloris Leachman) in "Young Frankenstein." The show has its world premiere at Seattle's Paramount Theatre Aug. 7-Sept. 1, and is slated to open on Broadway in late fall.

Along with Martin (who earned her Tony for her performance in Broadway's "My Favorite Year"), the Paramount offering will feature Megan Mullally (formerly of TV's "Will & Grace"), and Tony Award honorees Roger Bart, Sutton Foster and Shuler Hensley. More information and tickets: 206-292-ARTS.

Famous choir visits Kirtland

The legendary Mormon Tabernacle Choir made an unpublicized stop in Kirtland Sunday to sing a few songs for a small crowd outside the Historic Kirtland Village Visitors Center.

Choir members also spent part of their day touring historical sites in the city.

Fresh off a concert in Chautauqua, N.Y., the choir will also perform a show today with the Orchestra at Temple Square in Cuyahoga Falls at Blossom Music Center.

Many owners find that getting new business is harder because so many prospective clients and customers are away. And many are dealing with their own family and child care issues.

Randy Auslander, owner of Phil's TV, a store in Toledo, Ohio, contends with an annual dropoff in business that can cause a cash flow crunch.

Salt is leaking into marsh

A decades-old earthen cap has started to leak, allowing salt to leach into the fragile Mentor Marsh.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, the city of Mentor, the Lake County General Health District, the Lake County Soil and Water Conservation District, as well as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History are all concerned.

Mentor Marsh, largely owned by the museum, is a state-designated nature preserve.

The leaders of Cincinnatis most prestigious public high school have asked a familiar alumnus to take over as principal, a decision that will go to the Cincinnati Board of Education for final approval Monday night..

If approved by board members, Jeffrey J. Brokamp, 47, would take over in August as principal of Walnut Hills High School in the Evanston neighborhood, named the nations 34th best public high school by Newsweek magazine last month.

Brokamp, of Anderson Township, is a 1978 graduate of Walnut Hills, where his wife, Sherri, graduated a year later. His father, Raymond Brokamp, spent nine years as principal in the 1960s and 70s before becoming superintendent of Cincinnati Public Schools.
