By the time we reach the age of 21, most women realize that a truly great shade of well-applied lipstick is our most important weapon in the arsenal devoted to female facial-maintenance. A luscious mouth can make up for a multitude of imperfections, including those brought on by one very late night of partying or many years of early mornings spent packing kids' lunch boxes and running to the office.
Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell may have claimed on-screen that diamonds are a girl's best friend, but surely even those two knew that a girl's most indispensable pal is a tube of lipstick tucked into a clutch purse.
Still, there's one thing those ubiquitous women's magazine ads don't pound into your head while you're a sweet (or wild) young thing, dabbing on that shade of Chinese-crimson or peony-pink. Your dewy lips are destined to pucker and shrink over time, and you may end up having a mouth that resembles nothing but a talking-Cheerio perched under your nose.

To the Editor:American compassion never ceases to amaze me. The next celebrity to adopt a foreign child seems to be Angelina Jolie. Not only is this compassion shown to these children from other countries, it seems pets get a lot of attention. As in the Hurricane Katrina situation, most of the pets found homes with caring families.
Don't get me wrong. Compassion in any form, and to any living being, gets my vote over neglect. However, I can't help but wonder what the children in our own U.S. foster homes, orphanages, etc., feel about this? You know the ones who have been ignored for years. It's not only celebrities doing this, either. Many Americans have adopted children from countries other than the U.S. Even churches go to South America every year to help impoverished people when there are many in the United States who c...

It is not being alarmist to say that society is bombarded with sexual innuendo. The mentality is, "You have a right to be sexy by any means necessary." Unfortunately, this right or, more often, desire supersedes all moral values, common sense and appropriate behavior.
In a society in which instant gratification is everything, in which we focus on the product rather than the person, people use more elbow grease not to evolve spiritually but to change themselves superficially, thickening the layers between their authentic selves that lie beneath.
In advertising, television, film, sports, music and magazines, sex sells. Pro-sex feminism encourages women to express their sexuality - condemning men for objectifying women but condoning and supporting women who objectify themselves. I strongly believe in equal rights and liberation for women (sexually and otherwise), but where is the dignity, the integrity?
