Broward Circuit Judge Lawrence Korda isn't the only South Florida judge involved in controversy lately, but his case is the most serious. And it requires the most immediate action.
Chief Judge Dale Ross hasn't removed Korda from the bench, and doing so would be premature while his case is pending. But Korda, a respected family court judge for many years, shouldn't be hearing cases involving drugs or children until this gets settled.
Korda, 59, facing a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession, was busted for allegedly smoking pot in the middle of the afternoon in a Hollywood park. Korda has served for years on the board of the Children's Services Council of Broward County, so we are not talking about a loose cannon here.
"The Good Ol' Days" is a topic that most all of us talk about from time to time, wishing somehow we could revisit them. Well, be careful what you wish for, because it just might come true. In fact, I'd say it's pretty likely, this Saturday in downtown Arcadia.
By that, I'm referring to the DeSoto County Historical Society's Pioneer Day, which will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at McSwain Park. It'll be fun for the whole family; a chance to see old friends and make new ones.
This is the third year the society has hosted this event, the previous two taking place at the Tree of Knowledge Park in the antique district. It was moved because it's growing, and that's got to be a good thing.

March is Women's History Month, though you'd hardly know it if you went to the movies or watched television. Instead, our country is fixated on a dead Playboy model and the release of Frank 'Sin City' Miller's movie, "300." And that says a lot about the current state of feminism in America. We are living in an age where "feminist" is the new "F" word, and where the media has become increasingly hostile to women.
While I feel an immense pity for Anna Nicole Smith's turbulent life and the choices she made, I question where we're at as a culture that we can't let Smith die with some dignity.
March 22, 2007 -- Florida cops are reportedly examining the possibility Anna Nicole Smith took her own life.

Legal battles over Anna Nicole Smith's burial . . . at least three men claiming to be the father of her infant daughter Dannielynn . . . Smith's estranged mother and "nonexclusive" boyfriend competing for her custody . . . it all might lead a reasonable person to conclude that sexual mores and family values have reached an all-time low.
But, paradoxically, all this reflects a huge improvement in the status of children. A century ago, men's dalliances with lower-class women were winked at, and illegitimate babies often were abandoned to face destitution or death. The weakening of the institution of marriage has actually been a blessing for babies like Dannielynn.
The place to be Monday night was the crowded Kennedy Center Concert Hall, where D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities presented the 22nd annual Mayor's Arts Awards, including a special-recognition honor to longtime TV theater and film critic Arch Campbell.
Upon accepting the award, Mr. Campbell thanked WJLA-TV (Channel 7) for "giving me a home" after his contract was not renewed recently by WRC-TV (Channel 4), where he had appeared for three decades. Then, Mr. Campbell told the audience how it came to be that he received the evening's special recognition from Mr. Fenty.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. | Police have cited Broward Circuit Judge Lawrence Korda — one of two who made decisions recently in the Anna Nicole Smith case — for smoking marijuana in a park Sunday afternoon.
Three on-duty officers who were doing physical training in Stanley Goldman Park caught the judge about 2 p.m., Capt. Tony Rode said Monday. He said the judge was smoking a joint near a tree in the park, which is near Interstate 95.
“It would not draw media attention except that it was an elected official,” Rode said.
The Grand Prairie nurse's assistant is not only an animal lover, but she also goes undercover in her quest to learn how horses are bought, traded, then shipped to the now-declining equine-meat industry.
Although an extensive December article in Texas Monthly didn't quote her by name, on her insistence, it did describe the Hamburg-born Uta Sondergeld-Queen as a "lone anti-slaughter activist from Germany" observing a Stephenville horse auction. (She did agree to be identified for this column.)
Up until then, Sondergeld-Queen said she had been pretty much tolerated in horse-trading circles by men -- because of her blond, blue-eyed resemblance, she said, to the late Anna Nicole Smith. An aspiring actress who seeks work under the name of Uta Sander, and a former model whose likeness she reported graced 10 glossy pages of Playboy's German-language edition in 1988, Sondergeld-Queen said her reception from women in the horse bidness has been less cordial.
