PHOENIX -- Brad Penny continued his mastery of the Arizona Diamondbacks and the National League. The right-hander earned his 10th win and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Arizona 8-1 on Monday night.

He allowed one run and four hits in eight innings and improved to 7-2 against the Diamondbacks. Penny (10-1) lowered his NL-leading ERA to 2.04. His only loss this season came against the Los Angeles Angels on May 18.

Jonathan Broxton pitched the ninth to complete the five-hitter.

PHOENIX (AP) - Brad Penny won his tenth game by pitching the LA Dodgers over the Arizona Diamondbacks 8 to 1. The win moves the Dodgers within a half-game of the division-leading Diamondbacks.

Penny allowed one run and four hits in eight innings and improved to 7-2 lifetime against the Diamondbacks. Penny is 10-1 overall. He lowered his NL-leading ERA to 2.oh-four. His only loss this season came against LA on May 18th.

Jonathan Broxton pitched the ninth to complete the five-hitter.

CLEVELAND (AP) - CC Sabathia joined Boston's Josh Beckett as the majors' only 11-game winners by pitching the Cleveland Indians to a 5 to 2 win over Oakland.

Sabathia is 11-2. He allowed nine hits in his second complete game this month. He's 2-5 lifetime in 12 career starts against the A's.

Ryan Garko drove in two runs with a fourth-inning double off Chad Gaudin, who fell to 6-3. Travis Hafner homered for Cleveland.

Alfonso Soriano hit a game-ending two-run single to give the host Chicago Cubs a 10-9 victory against the Colorado Rockies last night after the Cubs’ bullpen blew an 8-3 lead in the ninth inning.

After Todd Helton doubled in a run with no outs in the ninth against reliever Scott Eyre, Bobby Howry (4-4) took over and was greeted by consecutive run-scoring singles from Garrett Atkins and Brad Hawpe. Then Troy Tulowitzki hit a three-run homer to put the Rockies ahead by 9-8. After Tulowitzki’s home run, a fan charged at Howry and was only a few feet from the mound before guards tackled him.

The Cubs started a rally in the ninth with the help of two singles and an error. With the bases loaded, Soriano hit his single, driving in pinch-runner Jacque Jones and Koyie Hill.

Earlier this month, Boston Red Sox fans were angry. All right, Red Sox fans can often get angry when anyone says anything they construe as negative about their team or positive about their team’s archrival, the Yankees.

But in this particular instance, they were outraged because it was the start of a 17-day interleague segment of the major league schedule, and the Yankees were playing the unimposing Pittsburgh Pirates while the Red Sox were playing the Arizona Diamondbacks, who were practically in first place in the National League West.

Those games came at a time when the Yankees had revived themselves and were winning. Not surprisingly, the Yankees swept the Pirates in a three-game series (and then the Diamondbacks, too) on their way to a nine-game winning streak that slashed Boston’s lead over them to seven and a half games.

PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks are alone atop the NL West for the first time since April 30th after whipping Baltimore 8 to 3 for their seventh win in nine games. Stephen Drew and Chad Tracy homered. Eric Byrnes drove in two runs.

The victory, coupled with San Diego's 4-2 loss to Boston, gave Arizona a 1-game lead over the Padres. The Diamondbacks have a game and a-half edge over the Los Angeles Dodgers, who come to Phoenix for a 4-game series beginning Monday.

The Diamondbacks built an early lead and coasted behind Doug Davis, who is 5-8 with the win. He allowed two runs and ten hits in six and a-third innings.

Brad Penny will try to become the National League's first 10-game winner tonight when the Los Angles Dodgers head to Arizona for the first of four straight games against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

Both Philadelphia's Cole Hamels and Jake Peavy of San Diego failed in their bids over the weekend to become the NL's first starter to 10 wins. The AL already has a trio of double-digit winners, including Josh Beckett, who leads the majors with 11 victories.

Penny has won two straight starts and is 4-0 over his last six outings. He has allowed just a run in each of his last three starts, including Tuesday against Toronto that also saw him scatter six hits with five strikeouts over seven innings of a 10-1 victory. The right-hander improved to 9-1 on the year with the NL's second best earned run average at 2.12.

Florida Tech graduate Steve Condotta was chosen in the 12th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the team he grew up rooting for -- the Toronto Blue Jays.

But the Mississauga, Canada, native can't report to Dunedin just yet. He's awaiting a work visa, which is required for him to play professional baseball.

In the second game of this set on Saturday, Eric Byrnes' majestic solo homer kicked off a three-run fifth for Arizona, as the Diamondbacks dug out of an early four-run hole to pick up a 7-4 win.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are set to collide in the rubber match of a three-game interleague series at Tropicana Field.

Yesterday, Dioner Navarro's home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh gave Tampa Bay the lead, and the Devil Rays held on for a 4-3 victory. Akinori Iwamura went 2-for-4 with a home run, double and two runs scored for Tampa Bay, which ended a three-game losing streak.

After scoring three runs in the sixth inning off Devil Rays starter Scott Kazmir to tie the game at 3-3, the Dodgers loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh but came up empty, and Navarro's blast in the bottom of the inning put Tampa Bay in front.

Not as his favorite baseball player, mind you, or his least favorite. Francisco Morales was responding to a question about hitters, about who is best at what many consider to be most difficult task in sports -- hitting a round ball with a round bat.

"His hand-eye coordination is exceptional," Morales said of Bonds, the controversial San Francisco Giants slugger who's closing in on Henry Aaron's career home run record. "Manny Ramirez is excellent, Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa and David Ortiz are all good examples of highly-skilled hitters. And Ortiz is a good guy, a good role model for young people."

As the Bears' new hitting coach, Morales is something of a role model, too. He is trying to show young players how handle the demands of being a professional. That and hitting a round ball with a round bat.

The right-hander will take an 0-8 record and a 7.85 ERA into this afternoon's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but Devil Rays skipper Joe Maddon stopped short of calling this a make-or-break start for Jackson, who will turn 24 in September.

"He's a young man, and we knew coming into this season there'd be some ups-and-downs," Maddon said before Saturday's game against the Dodgers. "I don't believe that this is a make-a-break. I'm not really into that.

VISALIA -- The price is likely to rise once again for plans to rebuild a minor-league baseball stadium at Recreation Park.

Renovation of the 61-year-old stadium -- home to the single-A Visalia Oaks baseball team -- was approved by the Visalia City Council in April at an estimated cost of $11.6 million.

But that price, and the council's approval, was based on doing the work in one fell swoop during the 2007-08 offseason, saving a projected $1.8 million from spreading the project out in phases over two seasons.
