Who knew they would name a street after one of the fishing world's all-time greats, a one-time Richmonder whose legacy still evokes smiles and nods?

The Joe Brooks on the street sign, I learned later, pays homage to the late Joseph E. Brooks, who served 11 years on Richmond's City Council.

Two weeks after the Sunshine State Games brought some 7,000 amateur athletes to the area, Polk County is about to be invaded again by several youth sporting events that will have the roads, hotels and restaurants bustling with activity.

The National Softball Association is bringing 110 teams to the area for its B state tournament, which starts today.

Youth Basketball of America returns to Polk County after a two-year hiatus beginning Sunday and running for a week with 130 boys basketball teams.

Tony Masilotti gets sentenced to federal prison today, but you'd never know it from the way he's been acting the past few months.

In January, the ex-Palm Beach County commissioner pleaded guilty to selling his services for money. In April 2006, The Post broke the first story of his illegal profiteering - $1.3 million from the sale of land in Martin County to the South Florida Water Management District. It was part of a scheme to funnel money to the woman he was divorcing. Masilotti said that none of the money went to him, but it did. He said that he wasn't involved in the sale, but he was. In many follow-up stories, The Post exposed those lies and other deals.

Masilotti could get up to five years. He had to forfeit about $9 million worth of property and $175,000 in cash. Apparently, however, arrogance is not something Masilotti intends to give up, even after all that has happened.

The Fort Lauderdale auction room had been reserved. There was interest from the presumably super-rich of 12 nations, according to the auctioneer. There was even an appearance by the island's owner, Fort Lauderdale millionaire Jack Holcomb.

But Leaf Cay -- the private Bahamas island he put up for auction Thursday at Marriott's Harbor Beach Resort and Spa -- didn't attract any bidders willing to put up the $12 million minimum Holcomb was asking for the island.

''When things go wrong, I always have a Plan B, C, D and E,'' Holcomb said, offering no details about what any of those plans might entail.

Beer, food take center stage

Trolleys, beer and food are all part of the second Downtown International Beer & Food Tasting event in Cape Coral on Saturday.

The event is sponsored by the Cape Coral Community Redevelopment Agency and will be at downtown bars and eateries.

About 350 tickets remain for the event, which is open to only 1,000 people. For $10, those 21 and older can hop aboard a trolley that stops at participating restaurants, stay as long as they like and get on the trolley and go to the next stop from 7 to 11 p.m.

Leaf Cay, a Caribbean islet ringed by white beaches and pristine water, was expected to sell for at least $12 million during a highly publicized auction Thursday afternoon. Instead, the island once owned by Queen Elizabeth II drew zero takers.

"If you think I'm depressed, I'm not," said Louis "Benny" Fisher Sr., chairman of the Pompano Beach-based Fisher Auction Co. "We will sell this property, and it will be a momentous event."

Tony Pough, Tim McQueen and Joseph Brunson, the 3 Hebrew Boys LLC principals accused of securities fraud, asked an S.C. judge Thursday to unfreeze $17 million gleaned from investors — and to allow them to take a Caribbean cruise.

Never mind that the Midlands trio faces up to 10 years in prison and $50,000 in fines if convicted and is still being investigated by state and federal authorities for alleged investment fraud.
