I f you like your 'cue spicy, peppery, sweet and salty, this week's column is for you. In preparation for grilling season, I recently taste-tested a lineup of red wines alongside over-the-top sauces in search of some winning combos.
Lesson learned: Contrary to popular opinion, a wine with some restraint makes the best match for dripping red meat (or whatever you choose to grill) rubbed or slathered with mouth-scalding ingredients like cayenne pepper and Worcestershire sauce, then fired over hot flames.
My winning barbecue wines are, for the most part, reasonably priced reds with good fruit and integrity. They aren't remarkably elegant, nor are they over the top. But they do one thing very well, and that is to play a supporting role to your world-class 'cue, whether it's marinated, sauced or rubbed.

Last Friday, during a game at the Belmont University summer basketball camp, Christ Presbyterian Academy?s Zaccheus Mason roared in for a dunk. The resulting thunderous putdown wound up shattering the backboard, sending glass and debris flying everywhere.
?I?ve never witnessed anything quite like it,?? said CPA coach Drew Maddux, who said the dunk occurred late in the third quarter against Overton and, needless to say, ended the game. ?The glass in the backboard shattered into what seemed like a million pieces.
