Thursday, March 22, 2007

America's war on terror has lengthened the time it takes to get a passport.

With passports now required to visit Mexico and Canada, Americans have to wait about 10 weeks to get them, said Charles Hutson, Cape Girardeau County circuit clerk.

The application process used to take about six weeks, he said.

Couples Not Rushing to Civil Unions in New Jersey

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

NEWARK, March 20 ? Preliminary figures released on Tuesday show that 229 same-sex couples applied for civil union licenses in New Jersey in the first month since they became available, far fewer than the 1,700 who registered as domestic partners in the state within that option?s first month in 2004.

The number of civil unions, which includes 10 couples who already had such status in other states, represents about 1 percent of the same-sex couples experts estimate live in New Jersey, and suggests that the ceremonies have been far less popular here than when they were first introduced in Vermont in 2000 and in Connecticut in 2005.

Connecticut, whose total population is 40 percent of New Jersey?s nearly 9 million, registered 649 civil unions in the first three months. Vermont, with about 620,000 people, granted 405 civil unions in the first month, though many were for out-of-state couples.

Looking good: OK, guys, pick your spring trends

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Men probably appreciate the transition from winter to spring -- and summer -- more than women. They get to get out from underneath all those sweaters and scratchy wools, and break out, dare we say, the Bermuda shorts and tees!

In other words, lighter clothing.

Daniel Billett, who writes a newsletter on men's fashion and grooming for www.about.com., came up with five spring and summer wardrobe additions that lean more toward a casual look, which is perfect for Sacramento.

Corporate privacy a growing concern

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

New York — Wal-Mart's disclosure that an employee was tapping phone conversations and text messages is drawing attention to a growth industry within corporate America: the business of keeping things secret.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. fired the employee, Bruce Gabbard, maintaining he acted alone and didn't receive authorization to eavesdrop. Federal authorities are investigating.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Gabbard said he worked in an amply staffed unit whose mission was to shore up the walls around Wal-Mart's internal data and communications, protecting them not just from Internet hackers but from leaks to company critics. He declined further comment when contacted this week by The Associated Press.

Passport backlog bringing delays

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

For the second time in a month, airline travelers across the country were stranded over the weekend because of severe winter weather. This time, instead of a blizzard, the problem was an ice storm that paralyzed the Northeast.

The 100,000 customers of US Airways who spent Sunday night in airports are, for the most part, on their way by now. But there is a different kind of delay facing the traveling public, and the only way to counteract it is to prepare well in advance.

As of Jan. 23, everyone coming into the United States by plane from Canada, Mexico or Bermuda must have a valid U.S. passport. At the first of next year, a passport will be required to enter this country by land or sea, including ferries and commuter trains, from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

ON THE TOWN: Mmmmm, Good!

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

When only hot soup will hit your spot, canned soup just doesn't do it. Maybe it's the mushy noodles. Or way too much sodium. Or perhaps the money-saving soup companies don't share my viewpoint regarding what "hearty" means. And soup is just so easy to make.

Because soup is mostly water (even your grandmother's chicken soup), lots of flavor must be added, or your soup will taste like, well, water.

The most basic soups start with onions. Even if you add little more than onions and salt to water, you will have the makings of a flavorful broth. Other ingredients, such as garlic, celery, carrots, herbs and spices, make the broth more flavorful.

Artist returns home to launch art show

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

Although they haven't lived in Coshocton for about 32 years, two brothers, one of them a Xenia artist, will be going home next weekend to open a month-long show.

Starting with a reception on Saturday, March 24, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Pomerene Center for the Arts, the artistic talents of Caleb Bynum, of Xenia, and his brother Paul, a commercial photographer in Columbus, will be on display until April 27.

Asked to describe his art form, Caleb calls himself a "realist," says that his work is compulsive. When he sees something he likes, he feels compelled to draw it. His medium might be a pencil drawing or acrylic painting ? a person, a building, a scene. His favorite subject is "faces". Caleb says he is a perfectionist, that his work must be right. He explained that an artist's picture is never completely finished. You are your own critic ? you finally have to leave it and move on!

Colors this spring include the usual range of corals, magentas, yellows, purples and greens, all of which help create the overall idea of blooming flowers. Touches of different fabrics, as well as color combinations are the things to play with and have fun with this season.

"Two words can summarize this spring season," said Mike Kachenmeister, a manager at the American Eagle Westfield Shoppingtown Franklin Park location. "Bright colors."

In an effort to assist those residents who can’t get to the post office to apply for a passport during the week, the main post office, 1501 S. Clinton St., was open Sunday afternoon. Hundreds of area residents lined up to get their paperwork started.

Don't Forget Your Passport - Or Common Sense

Monday, March 19, 2007

What do high school seniors riding motor scooters around Bermuda, senior citizens strolling through a Mexican bazaar and honeymooners enjoying a romantic dinner in Quebec have in common? If they flew to their destinations, they had to present valid passports.

New travel regulations require U.S. citizens traveling by plane outside the continental United States (including Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda), to present a passport, a Merchant Marine document or a NEXUS card.

If you don't have a passport and are planning a spring break trip, a high school graduation getaway or a family vacation that involves flying to another country, start the passport application process early. This isn't a task to neglect until the last minute.

Fishing rebounds around isle, slow elsewhere

Monday, March 19, 2007

To expand the Reel Report, we want to get more fishing information from other parts of the county, especially from the Kemah and San Leon areas, as well as farther down Bolivar Peninsula.

Sunday afternoon, I drove over to Eagle Point Fishing Camp and had a nice visit with Capt. Roy, the manager. We reminisced about the evolution of fishing in that area, from the 1950s to present. Eagle Point Camp remains one of the better spots for access to the Marker 59 area and gas wells over in Trinity Bay.

Passport delays

Ellis County District Clerk Melanie Reed announced this week that according to the U.S. Department of State, the wait for passport processing has increased to 10-12 weeks from the original six-weeks turnaround (expedited service is taking three to four weeks). The recent law changes requiring passports when traveling by air or sea to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda has created a huge rush of passport requests for people planning to travel this summer...

Reed suggests that customers be prepared by having the following information available when they come: A completed application, a separate check for each passport application in the amount of $67 for adults or $52 for children under the age 16 (expedited fees are $127 or $112 in check), payable to the U.S. Department of State-Passports, $30 in cash for each passport, an original or certified copy of each birth certificate and two 2-inch by 2-inch passport photos.Reed al...

“I have moved around additional clerks to help when there is a rush but there will be certain times during the day when there will be a longer wait time,” she said.“Applicants can speed up the process by following the government requirements and having everything ready,” Reed said. “We will do our best to serve each customer as quickly and accurately as possible. Song of the sea

Sunday, March 18, 2007

"We are off to see the world from the deck of a sailboat," says Steve Anderson in his travel journal's prologue. He and his wife, Pam Steele, are preparing for a second season of sailing the Mediterranean Sea. Beginning in April, the Knoxville couple will navigate their 46-foot Hylas sloop from Tunisia to the north coast of Sicily and then into the Adriatic Sea, where they will anchor in Croatian and Albanian ports. Before they tie up for winter, they will wend through the Greek Isles.

"It's been Steve's dream for 30 years," says Pam.

Now retired from legal careers, the couple streamlined their lifestyle so discovery through sailing is the primarily focus. They keep in touch with friends through e-mails, often describing luscious fresh seafood meals with fine local wines, coastlines that crumble into the sea, encounters with ornery marina clerks and land excursions to ancient Roman fortifications and Tunisian carpet merchants.

The line was long as future travelers flooded the Conway post office Saturday, seeking passports for family vacations and romantic getaways.

Residents didn't grumble as their numbers were called and photographs snapped at the post office's first Saturday passport fair aimed at helping speed more people through the registration process, post office employee Bob Long said.

"We're going on a cruise at the end of the year, and we thought it was better to be prepared," Conway resident Thomas Windley said.

Around Us 03-17-2007

LUBBOCK — Whether the budget allows for space-age sprinklers or calls for more of a tuna-can fix, Lubbock lawns have a wealth of options for thrifty greenery this summer.

Spring temperatures are returning to the Southern Plains, and residents can save money and water with some simple tweaks in March.

New water rates kick in April 1 and charge increasing rates as customers use more and more water. Residents are unlikely to pour enough on their lawns to face the highest prices: customers are allowed 40,000 gallons a month — enough to fill a good-sized swimming pool — at a middle, $2.61 irrigation rate.

Doral sure to draw crowd

Sunday, March 18, 2007

ORLANDO — If CA Championship officials wanted to sell 50,000 daily tickets to this week's World Golf Championship event at Doral Resort & Spa, they probably could.

We all know South Florida sports fans are as fickle as the weather, but it has been proved that if you put on a top-notch event, they will come. And bring plenty of their friends with them.

For pure golf fans, this week isn't much below that of a major championship. That became certain Friday, when all of the top 50 players in the world committed to the event, which used to be known as the American Express Championship.

Big money in guarding secrets

Sunday, March 18, 2007

NEW YORK – Wal-Mart's disclosure that an employee was tapping phone conversations and text messages is drawing attention to a growth industry within corporate America: the business of keeping things secret.

He declined further comment when contacted by The Associated Press.

Erna store construction could revive community

Sunday, March 18, 2007

LONDON ? Not unlike the phoenix, the mythical bird that rose from its ashes, a feed and convenience store is taking shape in a grain field seven miles east of here in Erna, once a trade center for farmers and ranchers in three counties.

Bret Bauer, who farms about 1.5 miles east of Erna, said the agribusiness has sold supplemental feed and hay since he opened a little more than a year ago and has proven to be a favorite stop of area ranchers and hunters.

The new construction in Erna, across the county road from a burned-out chimney that once was part of the Leon Cotton Gin complex, will feature a convenience store, a coffee and hamburger bar, gasoline pumps and a limited supply of groceries in addition to the feed supplies already available.

More Vacation Getaways Now Require a Passport

Sunday, March 18, 2007

What do high school seniors motor-scootering around Bermuda, senior citizens strolling through a Mexican bazaar and honeymooners enjoying a romantic dinner in Quebec have in common? If they flew to their destinations, they had to present valid passports.

New travel regulations require U.S. citizens traveling by plane outside the continental U.S. (including Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda), to present either a passport, Merchant Mariner Document or NEXUS air card.

If you dont have a passport and are planning a spring break trip, a high school graduation get-away or a family vacation that involves flying to another country, start the passport application process early. This isnt a task to neglect until the last minute.
