Honoring artists and athletes

Friday, June 29, 2007

Although the BET Awards doled out awards to some of entertainment's most celebrated performers on Tuesday night, from Beyonce to Jennifer Hudson, it was the show's tributes to living legends and recently departed giants that evoked the most emotion.Lifetime achievement honoree Diana Ross urged younger performers to "keep it classy" and refrain from foul behavior. A tearful Patti LaBelle joined an all-star tribute to R&B crooner Gerald Levert, who died last year. And fists pumped in the air as hi...

Michael Jackson's Family Calls for Help

Friday, June 29, 2007

Michael Jackson’s siblings — including Janet — and his parents are so worried about the failing pop star that they’ve sent out an emergency 911 call.

Sources tell me that the Jacksons are in the process of contacting Thomas Mesereau, the superstar criminal lawyer who won Jackson an acquittal two years ago in his child molestation trial.

The word from the Jacksons is that they’ve met several times as a family and discussed bringing Mesereau in for an intervention to save Michael.

Summer songs make you feel good

Friday, June 29, 2007

NEW YORK - Each summer, a song emerges that comes to define those warm, sunshiny months for seasons afterward: Donna Summer's "Bad Girls." Alice Cooper's "School's Out." Usher's "Yeah." Beyonce's "Crazy In Love." And, unfortunately, the "Macarena."

But not all songs released in the summertime can become the next "SexyBack," the Justin Timberlake jam that had clubs rocking last summer, or "I Get Around," the Beach Boys 1964 cruising hit, or even the "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini," which Bryan Hyland made a No. 1 hit in 1960.

Friday, June 29, 2007

The musical genius of Prince was immediately apparent when the teenaged artist released his 1979 hit tune, "I Wanna Be Your Lover."

The world was just getting a peek at the young man who would blossom into an award-winning performer, a man whose artistry and influence would span the globe. Prince's music has spanned myriad styles - from his early material, rooted in R&B, rock, and soul - and he has constantly expanded his musical palette throughout his career, absorbing many other genres, including funk, New Wave, pop, rock, blues, jazz and hip-hop.

Born June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Prince Rogers Nelson honed the circumstances of heritage as the background for his hit movie and Oscar-winning soundtrack, 1984's "Purple Rain." Although wildly popular before that point, from there, Prince's superstardom was lunched.
