Even the drive-in movie theater that once operated in the parking lot has called it quits.

But Pontiac officials insist a new day is, at last, on the horizon for the aging taxpayer-funded Silverdome that opened in 1975 and was home to the Lions for 26 years. More than a year after developers one by one withdrew their proposals to buy and redevelop the site at Interstate 75 and M-59 because of politics and indecision by elected leaders, Pontiac is once again trying to sell the dome and redevelop the 127.5 acres upon which it sits. A request for proposals was issued earlier this month, and bids are due back Oct. 11.

Sweeten earns law degree

William Sweeten received his juris doctor degree from the Nashville School of Law.

He is a graduate of Lincoln University and New Bloomfield HIgh School.Sweeten will practice law in Nashville, Tenn.

HURON COUNTY CONCEALED CARRY LIST

Michigan needs earlier primary

Michigan is under siege. Elected officials ranging from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Sen. Dianne Feinstein to President George W. Bush all want to increase fuel economy standards to levels that would impose dramatic costs on the Big Three automakers, forcing them to cut more jobs and shutter more plants in Michigan.

The Bush administration's proposal would cost Detroit's automakers at least $85 billion and drive up the new cost of a vehicle for motorists by $6,000. The Pelosi/Feinstein mandates would be even more costly to Michigan's economy and consumers.

The Big Three automakers, which invest more in research and development than any other industry in America, are joined by Toyota in opposing the fuel regulations because they are technologically infeasible from an engineering standpoint. But politics are driving the auto debate in Washington, not facts. Michigan has the most to lose if draconian mandates are enacted.

Monday obituaries

Lester E.
