Travis Buck decided from the moment he made contact that he would stretch his hit into a triple. The rookie wanted to test center fielder Johnny Damon and did so - barely.

Three batters later, Buck scored the winning run on Bobby Kielty's bases-loaded grounder in the bottom of the 11th inning, and the Oakland Athletics rallied for a 5-4 win over the New York Yankees on Friday night.

"I basically made that decision coming out of the box," said Buck, whose father grew up a Yankees fan. "Damon doesn't have that strong of a throwing arm. I wanted to test it. ... Crossing the plate with the winning run to beat the Yankees ... I'm still trying to calm down."

The Texas Longhorns almost have their 29th win of the season.

Texas had a 7-2 lead on Texas Tech with two outs in the ninth inning Friday when a storm blew into UFCU Disch-Falk Field, shutting down the lights and causing the game to be suspended until 2 p.m. today.

"That's the biggest storm I've ever played in," said Longhorns first baseman Chance Wheeless, who extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a single in the second inning. "Look at the wind."

Sell, the marketing supervisor for the UW-Madison's Surplus With A Purpose (SWAP) Shop, is anxious for the participants in the first Wiscontrepreneur Challenge to walk the aisles of the shop at 2102 Wright St.

The goal will be for students to find items worth no more than $10 at the East Side shop that they can turn into a business.

Maybe the idea will come from a $1 bag of paper clips or a container of 100, 3-inch glass capillary tubes. The store also holds old desks, chairs, file cabinets, dozens of three-ring binders and boxes of computer parts.

Bobby Kielty drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded grounder in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Oakland Athletics rallied for a 5-4 win over the New York Yankees on Friday night.

Huston Street (2-1) pitched one scoreless inning for the win two days after taking a loss against the Chicago White Sox.

Travis Buck got aboard in the 11th on a one-out triple to right-center. Mark Ellis was plunked by loser Brian Bruney (0-1), who then intentionally walked Nick Swisher to bring up Kielty. First baseman Doug Mientkiewicz dove to grab Kielty's grounder but had to rush his throw and couldn't get Buck at the plate.

AUSTIN James Russell struck out 11 in 6 2/3 innings and Bradley Suttle drove in three runs as Texas built a 7-2 lead against Texas Tech on Friday night in a game suspended one out from completion.

The Longhorns scored in the first three innings to build a 5-1 lead, and Suttle homered in the fifth. The game was stopped by rain with two outs in the ninth. It will be completed today.

In other action Texas State 7, Southeastern Louisiana 0 Justin Fiske struck out 13 in a two-hit shutout and had a no-hitter for 6 1/3 innings as the Bobcats beat the Lions in San Marcos.

National Park Service officials announced this week that American Transmission Co. is making the payment to offset the effects of a 345-kilovolt power line crossing the Namekagon River. The controversial line will cross the river - part of the federally protected St. Croix National Scenic Riverway - in northern Wisconsin near Hayward.

A new coach, a new offense and a new defense will be on display at Texas State's annual maroon-and-gold spring game today at Bobcat Stadium.

Coach Brad Wright took over in February from David Bailiff, who left to coach at Rice. Since then, Wright has hired a mostly new staff, changed the offense from a single-back base formation to an offset I running alignment, and ditched the 4-2-5, man-to-man defense ? a staple at Texas State for the better part of a decade ? in favor of a 4-3 multiple package, emphasizing more zone coverage.

BISMARCK, Ark. Matt Jones struck out eight and threw a three-hitter, and Peydon Roberts smacked a pair of homers as Horatio pounded Bismarck, 14-1, in District 7-3A baseball action Friday.

Roberts first homer came in the second with one on, and his second was a three-run shot in the third for the Lions, now 8-2 in district.

Kolton Saulsbury smacked a solo home run in the first for Horatio (19-6 overall), and Sam Cowling hit a two-run homer. Saulsbury and Cowling also had a single each. Jones also had a double and single.

AUSTIN – No. 6 Texas was just two strikes away from a series-opening 7-2 win over Texas Tech on Friday before the game was halted with two outs in the ninth inning due to a severe thunderstorm that passed over UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The game will resume at 2 p.m. today and Game 2 of the series will follow immediately after.

Texas' leading hitter Bradley Suttle came through in the clutch for the Longhorns with two outs in the bottom of the first when he laced an RBI single to left field that scored Kyle Russell. Russell kept the Longhorns alive in the frame when he deposited a first-pitch offering from Ramos into shallow center field.

Virginia Kay Davis, 40, was born in Fronia to the parentage of John Leeman Davis and Arlene Deloise Jackson. She was educated in Greenville Independent School District. She loved singing, children and people talking to her. She departed this life April 6, 2007.

She leaves to cherish her memories her mother of Greenville; siblings Linda B. Jackson of Long Beach, Calif., Vera Davis of Greenville, Pamela Davis of Greenville, Elizabeth Austin of Greenville, Larry Davis of Greenville, Ricky Davis of Garland, John Christopher Davis of Greenville and Travis Davis of Greenville; four nieces and six nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and Gerry and Racheal Davis.
