Reservist served as chief of interrogations in Iraq

Friday, June 29, 2007

"What are you thinking right now?" Driscoll, a U.S. Navy reserve commander, asked the man through an interpreter.

"I'm wondering how I can get that pen out of your hand and drive it into your eye," the man replied.

As he recalled one of the more chilling interrogations he had supervised in Iraq, Driscoll sat in a quiet law library in Martinez.

Three Children Die in Colesville Fire

Friday, June 29, 2007

The mother of three children who were killed in a fire at their Colesville apartment remains critically injured. Fire officials say 30-year-old Elsie Nuka is being treated at Baltimore Shock Trauma. Her three daughters, four-month-old Makenzie Foncham, 2-year-old Megan Foncham and 4-year-old Chanelle Foncham all died at hospitals. Investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen after the mother placed a plastic device used to sterilize baby bottles near the stove. The mother then apparently went to sleep before being awakened by a smoke alarm.

It appears she tried to put out the fire by unplugging the sterilizer and throwing some of the burning materials into a bathtub, but she was overcome by the smoke

US immigration officials say the children's father, Ignatius Foncham, wasn't home when the fire broke out early Thursady morning because he's in custody and waiting to be deported back to Cameroon.

New trial urged in Lockerbie case

Friday, June 29, 2007

A former Libyan intelligence agent convicted of bombing Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, "may have suffered a miscarriage of justice" and should be granted a new appeal, a Scottish judicial panel ruled Thursday.

Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi was found guilty of murder in the December 1988 bombing, which killed 270 people, including 189 Americans. He was convicted in 2001 and has been serving a life sentence in a prison near Glasgow, Scotland. At the original trial, three Scottish judges convicted al-Megrahi of planting an unaccompanied suitcase containing a bomb-laden radio-cassette player aboard the flight. His co-defendant, Lamen Khalifa Fhimah, was acquitted.

The independent Scottish Criminal Cases Review considered the reliability of testimony from one witness and doubts relating to clothes al-Megrahi allegedly bought in Malta on Dec. 7, 1988, that were inside a suitcase containing the bomb. The panel said there was insufficient evidence to conclude the purchase took place.
