On a recent Friday morning, while reading the paper, I looked outside to see it swarming with the usual suspects, including a handful of common grackles.

The grackle is not a rare bird. In fact, quite the opposite, it is what we call one of the "common" birds, with numbers in the millions nationwide. Yet, despite its seemingly vast numbers, its U.S. population is less than half of what it was 40 years ago. That loss is so startling, it is one of the birds we at Audubon only recently identified in a major national news conference as one of the 20 common birds in serious decline across the country. I wondered to myself, as I looked out the window - will anybody care that such a "common" bird as the grackle is in decline?

OUR OPINIONS: Baker plays too safe

Preparation can help make this a bite-free summerBy Mar?a Cort?s Gonz?lez / El Paso TimesArticle Launched: 06/26/2007 12:00:00 AM MDT var requestedWidth = 0;

The BugBand pump spray is another quick option for repelling mosquitoes. He and thousands like him volunteered because, all those long decades ago, a dynamic young president asked them to think beyond themselves. It's time for America to re-establish that ethic, he says.

It's fascinating watching Dodd, now 63, try to claim the Kennedy mantle, for this reason. Although he's invoking JFK, the Kennedy Dodd really calls to mind is EMK -- that is, Edward Moore Kennedy. Like his close friend Ted, Dodd is a fixture in the Senate, a respected member of the body where he has served Connecticut since 1981, a man who has US senator stamped into his manner, speaking style, and indeed, very appearance.

Bike to Work prize puzzles avid cyclist

Every time I write about energy conservation, I get bombarded with e-mails from readers who accuse me of dastardly crimes against the planet.

They assume I live in air-conditioned splendor, that I recklessly squander gasoline by driving willy-nilly in an oversized luxury car and that I am a compulsive consumer who creates mountains of trash in order to feed some fundamental need to be on the cutting edge.

They're wrong.

Daily Briefing: UTILITIES / ENERGY: Deal struck for carbon dioxide

Denbury Resources Inc. on Monday agreed to acquire all the carbon dioxide captured from a synthetic fuel plant planned for construction in Natchez, Miss., by Rentech Inc. "The tall tree attracts the wind," and from now on China will be the main target of the criticism that used to be directed at the United States for refusing to accept binding limits on its greenhouse gas emissions.

    What's particularly striking is the speed with which China has passed the United States. In 2005 its CO2 emissions were 2 percent lower than those of the U.S.; in 2006 they were 8 percent higher. Yet China only has four times the population of the United States, and the average Chinese is nothing like a quarter as rich as the average American. In fact, the vast majority of Chinese don't even own cars. So why does China produce so much CO2?

    One reason is cement. The pace of building in China is so intense that the country produces 44 percent of the world's cement (the U.S. produces 4 percent), and cement production is a major source of greenhouse gases. The main culprit, however, is coal, which accounts for 70 percent of China's energy consumption.

Editorial: Good use of a Waco energy source

Landfills naturally emit methane gas, which contributes to the planet’s greenhouse effect.

Methane gas is a much more powerful global warming agent than carbon dioxide.

In the United States, landfills are the biggest culprits when it comes to leaking methane. Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina ? will vote their choices in January, and a host of others on Tuesday, Feb. 5, the agreed regular starting date by both parties.

So many states have moved their voting into early February because they believe their voice in the selection process will be enhanced.
