One might have expected more obvious overtures to that audience on the band's next studio album, but no - the musicians stick to a light, collegiate kind of rock that makes them something like the new (but significantly less rhythmic) Hall & Oates. </p><p>There's a big mix of modern and retro here - like the synthesizers on the quasi-funk lead single, "Makes Me Wonder," and the acoustic guitar juxtaposed against digital nuances on "Little of Your Time." This album is strong - up-tempo songs are danceable and the ballads are right for weepy primetime dramas - yet there is a sense of repetitiveness. Adam Levine's whiny, nasal voice is fun for a spell, but it varies so little that tracks begin to bleed over. </p><p> One highlight is "Nothing Lasts Forever," featured on West's "Heard 'Em Say." In Levine's world, though, this song is sped up and missing the bass and beat. The United States Football League was designed to rival the NFL. And it almost did. They spent the Summers playing football and throwing some big bucks at a new wave of stars. Of course Memphis was part of the action with the Memphis Showboats. </p><p>Former team president, now head Liberty Bowl President Steve Ehrhart, arranged a 25 year anniversary for USFL players this weekend at the Grand Casino in Tunica. Of course Reggie White was the biggest star of the Showboats and possibly the entire league. Although he passed away, he was there in spirit. As were about 50 other former players and coaches who wanted to relive the good old days. The USFL last for 3 years from 1983 to 1985.
