After achieving star status in the college game, the former Perry High School Panther can now sit back in that famous green room and let someone else make the big decision.

All of those choices led Thornton from Perry to Florida State University. His next stop: Madison Square Garden in New York City for the 2007 National Basketball Association Draft on June 28. He has his invitation in hand, which isn’t surprising since he is not only a projected first-round selection, but also a potential top 10 pick.

The 6-8, 220-pound forward is already finding out a little bit about life in major professional basketball. Since finishing his four-year career with the Seminoles, Thornton has gone through the long process of working out for various NBA franchises. The journey has taken him to Sacramento (Kings), Chicago (Bulls), Boston (Celtics), Charlotte (Bobcats), Minnesota (Timberwolves) and Milwaukee (Bucks).

Portland hopes to wipe away sins of past NBA drafts

The Portland Trail Blazers are scratching their heads,

trying to figure out which player to take with the No. 1

pick at Thursday's NBA draft.

Who will be top Gator taken in NBA draft?

Corey Brewer, Al Horford and Joakim Noah composed the best frontline in college basketball the past two seasons.

All three bypassed NBA millions as projected first-round draft picks in 2006 to return in 2007, a big reason why Florida won back-to-back championships.

It's also a big reason why the three will likely go within the first 10 picks of Thursday's NBA draft in New York City.

WRITERS NOOK: Letters to the editor, Part II

EDITORS NOTE: The following letters to the editor were written by juniors and seniors in Susan Lamonts composition classes at South Williamsport Area High School.)

The Growing threat

Dear editor,

25 drafts, dozens of stars, one Michael

USA TODAY's David DuPree recalls highlights of the NBA draft during the newspaper's 25 years:

Toss up — 1983

USA TODAY covered the last two years of the coin toss — when the top overall pick was decided by a coin toss between the teams that had the worst record in each conference. From the day Gibson was drafted, Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry thought that the rookie from the University of Texas had a chance to be like Armstrong. Fans might remember Armstrong for his outside shooting, but what made him special was his ability to defend point guards. Cavs coach Mike Brown and Ferry see the same in Gibson. That's why Gibson moved ahead of Damon Jones for playing time -- his defense.

? Why would Gibson move in front of Sasha Pavlovic? The Cavs still correctly believe that Pavlovic has to work on his defense and his general consistency. One of the tremendous benefits of the Cavs reaching the NBA Finals is that they can use the playoffs as a way to help judge their talent. Pavlovic started all 20 postseason games, averaging 9.2 points in 31 minutes.
