Famous ribs - with good reason

Friday, June 29, 2007

I confess that my palate normally turns even more jaundiced when the word "famous" is part of a restaurant's name. However, this is one barbecue place where the product actually lives up to the bragging rights.

Founder Dave Anderson spent the better part of 25 years scouring the country looking for the perfect blend of smoke, meat quality and sauce before he created his own style of sauce blend and smoking technique. Today, the restaurant offers five styles of sauce and smoked meats that can be eaten sans sauce, the mark of high quality products.

Anderson's St. Louis-style spareribs won the title of best ribs in America at the Great American Rib Cookoff, while its rich and sassy sauce scored the best barbecue sauce in America award at the American Royal Barbecue contest in Kansas City, Mo. Overall, Anderson has won more than 200 awards nationwide. Not bad for a rural country boy from the upper Midwest!

Alberto Fujimori speaks of returning to the presidency in Peru and he's running for Senate in Japan. But his hopes of staying out of prison depend on a court in Chile.

In an interview with The Associated Press late Wednesday, the former Peruvian leader confirmed he had accepted a small party's offer to run for parliament in Japan "because we do not have a presidential election in Peru soon.

"I still have my followers in Peru, and many of them are happy because a political party in such an important country as Japan has called on me to run. This is something very important for them," said Fujimori, who holds both Peruvian and Japanese citizenship.

Level the playing field with a set of new rules

Friday, June 29, 2007

You may still own one. It was a teeny paperback with a gargantuan following. Its pages and chapters spawned seminars and support groups. It was considered an überhip trend, a renaissance, a movement and the single girl's gospel. If you don't own one, someone you know does possibly your mother or maybe someone's mother from Chile to China. It was published in 27 languages.

But Wednesday night at the hip and trendy restaurant Cyclone Anaya in Midtown, 26-year-old Sydney and her hip and trendy gang of single girls were not so hip to it. "The Rules? Is that a book?" she asked.

It seems, more than a decade later, that The Rules: Time-Tested Secrets for Capturing the Heart of Mr. Right are all gender-wrong.
