Other than a passing fancy for Justin Timberlake and an ability to bear male children, I've never had much in common with Britney Spears. Unlike poor Brit-Brit, I've never been photographed driving with an infant on my lap, and I don't enjoy indulging in Red Bull-tinis with a Marlboro chaser. Except for a brief period following an unfortunate tanning incident in the early '90s, I've never been prone to leave the house sans underpants. And, fortuna...

Mary J. Blige might have had tears welling while she accepted her Grammy Awards this month, but could you see them through her eyelashes?
Her thick lashes were so long they were practically touching her eyebrows, and she wasn't the only one wearing eyelashes as an accessory.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Without "American Idol" to worry about, the Grammy Awards bounced back strongly in the ratings this year.
An estimated 20.1 million people watched the Dixie Chicks take home every trophy they were eligible for Sunday night. That's up 18 percent over last season, according to Nielsen Media Research.
Last year Grammy organizers decided to go head-to-head with "American Idol" on a Wednesday night and were clobbered; the telecast's 17 million viewers represented the smallest audience in the show's history.

Many record collectors, DJs and music junkies still consider vinyl to be the gold standard of recorded music scratches, pops and all.
That enduring appeal has helped Nashville's United Record Pressing, which cranks out 20,000 to 40,000 records a day, making it one of the largest and last vinyl record manufacturers in the country.

With Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, and Christina Aguilera headlining concerts at the Palace of Auburn Hills, and My Chemical Romance and Justin Timberlake performing at the Joe Louis Arena, it seems that the only place to see good, live music in metro Detroit is at a giant venue.
That, however, is definitely not the case. Great, live music can be heard just around the corner at smaller, more unique and less expensive venues, where bands play regularly.

Jason Tanz couldn?t tell you the first rap song he heard. But what he can recall, with some clarity, is his visceral reaction.
?I just remember I was scared to death ?cause I grew up in Fircrest,? the author said, laughing from his end of the line in New York.
?Tacoma obviously has a large black population,? continued the 32-year-old author, who is white. ?But at the time, and probably still now ? it was a pretty segregated city. A lot of black people lived on Hilltop, and a lot of white people lived elsewhere. ? So it (rap) just seemed like this total alien force.?

It?s a love-match made in Florida: Boca?s own tennis prodigy is hot for Orlando?s own singing sensation and, so it seems, vice-versa.
Tennis hunk Andy Roddick and pretty songbird Mandy Moore have started popping up all over the place together, including at Mizner Park?s Max?s Grille.
With Roddick?s on-the-court action now in full-bloom ? he went as far as the quarter-finals of the latest U.S. Open, falling to wily veteran Pete Sampras, and recently represented the United States in the Davis Cup ? it was a matter of time until 20-year-old Roddick?s social life heated up.

There's been some debate here at latimes.com about the root cause of Britney Spears' latest antics. Was that late night head shave a calculated plea for attention or a desperate plea for help? Either way she's clearly going through a rough patch and we can only hope that the decision to fix her hurting extensions by cutting off all her hair is the nadir of her recent descent into craziness. Brit's fellow Mouseketeers-turned superstars Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera have both been major...

LAS VEGAS — Reality isn't always what it appears to be in this gambling city, where a fake Eastern Conference jersey hung Sunday on a fake Statue of Liberty outside a very real casino on the Las Vegas Strip.
So perhaps it was fitting that the masters of illusion, Siegfried and Roy, had the job of welcoming those lucky enough or rich enough to score a ticket to the NBA All-Star game.

Music Row still can't stop talking about the Grammy Awards, and it's not because the Dixie Chicks and Carrie Underwood swept all four major categories.A week after the awards, many country music executives remain vocal and upset that Rascal Flatts and Underwood whose albums trailed only the High School Musical soundtrack in sales last year for all genres were not allowed to perform their hit songs. Instead they sang tributes to the Eagles and the late Western swing pioneer Bob Wills.
"When I looked at the show, there's this feeling of being in the back of the bus for this format," said Joe Galante, chairman of Sony BMG Nashville, Underwood's label.Neil Portnow, president of The Recording Academy, which puts on the Grammys, late this week reiterated the Academy's support for country music after hearing about continued complaints: "The academy is a huge fan and supporter of country music, as we have been over the years. Our program represents that."But Galante is not the only ...

Score a decisive victory in the culture wars for the Dixie Chicks. Their five-Grammy sweep in Los Angeles on Sunday night delivered the Texas trio a heady helping of sweet revenge on the country music establishment that abandoned them after singer Natalie Maines talked trash about George W. Bush in the lead-up to the war in Iraq in 2003.
The Chicks' Grammy dominance - the group took home trophies for album of the year for "Taking the Long Way" and best record and song (a writer's award) for "Not Ready to Make Nice," their adamant refusal to apologize to either the president or the former fans who demonized them for speaking their minds - sent a clear message: Blue state-friendly country is back on top.
It's as simple as that. Isn't it?

They get to look at the Golden Globes and all the various regional critics' polls when they make their picks for who will win the Academy Awards. By the time they make their choices public, usually, all the frontrunners have emerged.
They should try their luck with the Grammys, an award show that really has no reliable advance indicator of where the votes may fall. That's one of the reasons why so many of us music critics do such a lousy job forecasting the event.
Our results have been so off some years that it's no surprise that critics of music critics have said, 'Why don't you just have a monkey do the Grammy picks? You might wind up with a more accurate result."

And the sexy songstresses? Sure, The Pussycat Dolls showed off their legs in flirty, colorful dresses Sunday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and Hilary Duff wore a sparkly lingerie-style dress by Dolce & Gabbana, but there was nothing that came close to the scandalous looks of years' past. (Jennifer Lopez's plunging Versace V-neck in 2000 was the high point — or low point — of "look-at-me" fashion at the Grammys.)
Beyonce wore a champagne-colored strapless dress by Giorgio Armani Prive with crystals on the bustline and waistline, and Christina Aguilera was dressed in an Ungaro white strapless gown with purple trim around the bust and a beige ribbon around her waist. Shakira's famous body was covered in a delicate red strapless chiffon gown by Carolina Herrera.
"I had this plan for about three months. I walked into a Michael Kors store, and Michael Kors' mother was there, Joan Kors, and she was having a trunk show and there were models there," Blige told The Associated Press. "And I saw the dress and said put that dress on that model. The model was built and shaped like me. I said that's my Grammy dress. Put it on hold."

There are no polls to help predict who will win Grammy awards. Prognosticating who will be the night's big winners requires more James Carville-esque acumen than projecting the outcome of November elections.
Add to that the fact that each category has five nominees, and we're often talking about some real standoffs.

The veteran rock band is reuniting to open the show at the 49th annual Grammy Awards (8 p.m., EST/PST, Sunday, Feb. 11, CBS). It marks the first time in four years the trio has performed together.

Reuniting now feels appropriate, Sting told TV critics recently. "It seems an organic time to discuss the past and say, 'Hey, what did we achieve?' It would be nice to do something," he said.
