Good, Bad of NBA: Mavs Win, Celtics Lose

Thursday, March 22, 2007

At the other end of the NBA standings are the Boston Celtics, who are so bad that their coach opened his postgame remarks by saying that he wasn't trying to lose.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 23 points for the Mavs, who have the NBA's best record at 56-11, have won four straight and are 3-0 on a six-game road trip that started with a victory over Detroit, the other top team in the Eastern Conference.

"Tonight wasn't about West vs. East, it's about us getting better, getting ready for the playoffs," Nowitzki said.

MAYBE I'M MISSING something, but the Dallas Mavericks are clearly the best team in the NBA.

Perhaps the Phoenix Suns could make the Mavericks sweat a bit, but on paper Dallas has the inside track on the 2007 Larry O'Brien Trophy.

So you wonder why the NBA trade deadline passed yesterday with a whimper rather than some predicted bangs.

Skiles: Time for Bulls to step up

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

After the Bulls' front office elected to play a pat hand before the trade deadline last month, some players expressed doubts about the team as a legitimate Eastern Conference contender.

Now that head coach Scott Skiles has had some time to digest the Bulls' 104-103 clunker of a loss against the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night, even he won't rule out the possibility the team is too immature and inexperienced to take the next bold step, an assessment heard in and around the Berto Center for much of the last nine years.

"If we want to be an elite team and a really good team and a contender-type team, a performance like that can't happen at this time of year," Skiles said after an extended practice at the Deerfield facility on Monday afternoon. "If we're too young and not ready for that kind of environment, that may be the case, too. That obviously will show itself in the next several weeks. We're about to find out."

NBA: Questions remain down the stretch

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

Well into the final quarter of the NBA?s regular season, here are nine burning questions that are just begging for answers:

Nash or Nowitzki ? who?s the MVP? Last week?s classic between the Dallas Mavericks and the Phoenix Suns may be a microcosm of the season. It took two overtimes before the two best teams in the league settled things, and they were settled in favor of the Suns because of the most clutch player in the league: The two-time defending MVP. It?s not fair to argue in favor of Nowitzki just because he?s the best player on the team with the best record. Nash makes the good players around him look like stars, and the stars like superstars. Make it three in a row.

So, which of them will emerge from the flames of the red-hot West? Actually, neither. The Mavs and Suns are the two best teams, but neither of them will reach the Finals. That?s because the most fundamentally sound team, quiet and efficient all season, then lethal in the playoffs ? when defense matters ? is the San Antonio Spurs.

Northeast Ohio dealers report rise in car sales, drop in trucks

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

New car sales in Northeast Ohio are up for the first two months of the year while truck sales are down, according to the latest information compiled by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers' Association.

March car sales also appear to be fairly strong, boosted at least in part by strong showings at the recent Cleveland Auto Show that ended earlier this month, according to two Akron-area dealerships.Actual March sales figures will not be available until April.

While car sales sparkled, overall vehicle sales in the region were dragged down by the poor-performing truck segment, which covers light trucks and truck-based SUVs as well as big rigs.

The Dallas Mavericks and the Phoenix Suns have held the NBA's best records for much of the season, but many teams have put up impressive runs to enter the ever-so-popular debate over "who is the best?"

Although Sunday's loss to the Orlando Magic snapped the Miami Heat's nine-game winning streak, the Heat have a remarkable 10-3 record since losing Dwyane Wade to injury. Shaquille O'Neal, averaging 20.5 points and 8 rebounds per game after Wade's injury, has led the Heat to victories over several quality teams.

Acalanes High School boys assistant basketball coach Chris Huber might be, and here is why.

The last time Huber was pacing the sideline of a California Interscholastic Federation Northern Regional championship game he was at the other end, coaching against Acalanes.

Saturday, Huber will be with the Dons, this time as an assistant when they play Bishop O'Dowd at noon for the NorCal Division III title at the Stockton Arena in Stockton.

Bowie Kuhn, Major League Baseball's second-longest tenured leader, died Thursday at St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., following a short bout with pneumonia that led to respiratory failure, spokesman Bob Wirz said. The former commissioner was 80. "He led our game through a great deal of change and controversy," commissioner Bud Selig said. "Yet, Bowie laid the groundwork for the success we enjoy today."

West notes: Yao slowly returning to form

Friday, March 16, 2007

Yao Ming's conditioning isn't back to where he wants it, and he isn't moving as nimbly as he had hoped. But the Houston Rockets center is slowly getting back into the dominating form he displayed before fracturing his right leg, causing him to miss 32 games.

Yao was a legitimate MVP candidate before the injury, averaging 25.9 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.22 blocked shots and shooting 52.2% from the field and 86.7% from the free throw line.

Since he returned six games ago, his minutes are down to 28.7 from 34.6 and he is averaging 18.7 points and 8.3 rebounds and shooting only 45.6%.

Yet there were times, especially throughout the second half Wednesday night, when Barone stared ahead with a blank look and observed his troops appearing disinterested and disjointed.

Its R&R time for Iditarod winner

Thursday, March 15, 2007

Sitting with two of his dogs on the winners platform on Front Street in Nome, Alaska, Lance Mackey savored his first Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race victory.

His win Tuesday in the 1,100-mile Iditarod came just days after using most of the same dogs to win the 1,000-mile Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race.

He had good reason to sit back and relish being the first musher to win both races in the same year: Even he doubts hell do it again.
