Employees at Dallas-based Alpha Testing Inc. have been well aware the past few years that one of their colleagues, Brian Powell, a vice president, is being groomed and mentored to one day run and own the company.
Alpha tests soil for developers to see if land is contaminated. It also tests construction materials to make sure they meet building specifications.

The crane count will quadruple by year's end at the Park Lane mixed-use complex east of North Central Expressway as construction on the complicated project shifts to high gear.
Two tower cranes are at the 33-acre site now. Eight or nine will set up by December, said Eliot Barnett,managing partner of Dallas-based Harvest Partners, the project's master developer.

Far-flung exploration of Barnett Shale natural-gas reserves has carried producers an unlikely distance -- to Dallas' doorstep.
Dallas city officials are scrambling to establish drilling standards after pushing Big D's first set of Barnett wells through in mid-June.

Investors led by real estate developer David Craig plan to select and hire a nationally ranked firm by August to kick off the process of masterplanning nearly 500 acres of land around up-and-coming Collin County Regional Airport.
Craig -- the entrepreneur behind the 2,500-acre Craig Ranch urban community in the suburb of southwest McKinney -- envisions selling or leasing parcels of land around the airport to developers.
