Paternity Test Ordered for Anna Nicole Smith's Baby

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

DNA test was ordered by a Bahamian court judge on Tuesday to determine who is the real father of Anna Nicole Smith's infant daughter, Dannielynn.

Virgie Arthur, the late Playboy playmate's mother, confirmed to ABC News that a test was ordered in a closed court hearing on the Bahamian island of Nassau, though she declined further comment on the day's proceedings.

Larry Birkhead, the man many believe to be the father of the 6-month-old baby, was jubilant as he emerged from the courthouse.

People, 3/16

Remember when Lindsay Lohan proudly claimed she had been sober for seven days? According to the National Enquirer, the actress carries that water bottle everywhere for a reason. A spy told the tabloid a male friend intermittently was caught pouring vodka into Lohan's bottle at Los Angeles nightspot Les Deux. She was at her Feb. 28 turntable debut of "DJ Lindsay Lohan."

Mischa Barton recently was spotted getting trashed at the Anchor Bar in SoHo, the New York Post reported. Too much drinking and dancing forced the former "O.C." star outside to vomit. Unfortunately some smokers' shoes got soiled. Barton narrowly missed "Sopranos" actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler.

Former CBS correspondent Bill McLaughlin squarely blamed the network news program's failures on Katie Couric. McLaughlin, an associate professor of communications at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, told the Philadelphia Inquirer the CBS news program is filled with problems, "all of them named Katie." He predicted new executive producer Rick Kaplan will "stop futzing around with these light, cheery, frilly pieces she pushed through. The American public wants a hard-news show." CBS News spok...

Trumps may 'Apprentice' here next

Thursday, March 15, 2007

While we could get some competition from Miami and Las Vegas, a source very close to Donald Trump and his daughter and partner, Ivanka, says the Donald and his offspring/co-star most likely will bring the next new edition of "The Apprentice" to Chicago.

Vegas and Miami are in the mix, as the Trumps want to promote towns where they're developing major properties. One of the best, of course, is the Trump Tower at Wabash and the Chicago River, currently zooming skyward above our former longtime Sun-Times home.

ROLE REVERSAL ... OR PERHAPS NOT: Chicago Academy for the Arts alum Lara Flynn Boyle is following up her recent portrayal of Conrad Black's wife, Barbara Amiel (in a Canadian TV movie about the former Sun-Times owner), by portraying a cruel, greedy prostitute. This new role will be in the film based on Buddy Giovinazzo's 1993 collection of short stories, Life Is Hot in Cracktown, and will feature an ensemble cast, including Shannyn Sossamon and Vondie Curtis-Hall.

Grievance hearings were completed Wednesday for eight Johnson County employees fired when District Attorney Phill Kline took office Jan. 8.

The hearings, which began Tuesday, were closed under state law, county spokesman Casey Carl said.

Kline chose not to participate in the hearings because their outcome will have “no bearing on the DA’s office,” said his spokesman Brian Burgess, who declined to comment further.

Smith's laptops handed over

Saturday, March 10, 2007

A friend of Anna Nicole Smith who said she asked him to secure her belongings if "something ever happens" to her turned them over to authorities in South Carolina because he feared her death was drug-related and a crime, the man's attorney said Friday.

The friend, Ford Shelley, who lives in Myrtle Beach, S.C., wants prosecutors to determine if Smith's computer equipment offers any evidence of a crime, Shelley's Fort Lauderdale attorney, Walter "Skip" Campbell, said Friday.

"He has concerns ... that something might have occurred that led to the death of Ms. Smith," Campbell said. "He had some evidence and he wants it looked at by the authorities."

Florida Not Alone In Tax Woes

Saturday, March 10, 2007

TALLAHASSEE - Count Cliff Nellis among those miffed over his property taxes.

"We pride ourselves on being a low-tax state, but we don't have very low taxes," said the milk distributor and part-time insurance salesman. "My property value goes up to ridiculous levels, and so does the tax. Why does government spending need to go up 50 percent?"

Nellis isn't one of the many Floridians raising their voices over the Sunshine State's soaring property taxes. The 51-year-old grandfather lives in Nevada, one of many other states where residents are rebelling against their tax bills.

The Anna enigma: Who is Howard K. Stern?

Wednesday, March 7, 2007

What a banal man, to sit at the center of a tabloid mystery.

Days after Anna Nicole Smith's body was finally put to rest in the Bahamas, we probe the conundrum of Howard K. Stern like a tongue constantly searching a tooth-gap. For more than a decade, Stern was close to one of this nation's more bizarre celebrities — a woman whose death has proved a continuation of the scandal of her life.

If there is ever a movie of Smith's life, the actor playing Stern will require schlumpiness and an unremarkable screen presence. In TV interviews since Smith's death, Stern talks softly and with little inflection, his voice almost monotone except when he breaks into tears. He was a lawyer to Smith, but he also claims to have been her lover and the father of her infant girl. As we all know, there's a lot of competition for that last claim — the most significant challenge coming from a freelance photographer named Larry Birkhead.

Anna Nicole's body enroute to Bahamas for burial

Friday, March 2, 2007

MIAMI (Reuters) - The body of former Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith was moved from a Florida morgue on Friday for a final journey to the Bahamas for burial, a Reuters eyewitness said.

Smith's body was taken in a long motorcade to a Florida airport, carloads of paparazzi in tow and television news helicopters buzzing overhead as the procession was shown live on television.

The Fourth District Court of Appeal in West Palm Beach cleared the way for the funeral when it upheld on Wednesday a lower court ruling that gave custody of the body to a court-appointed guardian for Smith's 5-month-old daughter Dannielynn.

Anna Nicole Smith Laid to Rest Near Son

Friday, March 2, 2007

NASSAU, Bahamas - Former Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith was laid to rest Friday with all the pomp and circumstance of a royal funeral, but litigation surrounding a multi-million-dollar inheritance and the paternity of her baby daughter remain very much alive.

The principals waging a three-way custody battle over 5-month-old Dannielynn - Smith's companion Howard K. Stern, her mother Virgie Arthur and former boyfriend Larry Birkhead- walked into the white-columned church, and for at least a moment their bickering was put aside for the lavish closed-casket service.

Smith was then taken to her final resting place in a mahogany coffin draped in a rhinestone-studded pink blanket as police, smartly dressed in white belted tunics and pith helmets, maintained order. Onlookers, mostly Bahamians, spontaneously broke out into the hymn "When Peace Like a River" as the white hearse carrying the 39-year-old blonde bombshell and the rest of the funeral cortege arrived at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
