Motorcyclist killed in Westmoreland collision

A Westmoreland County motorcyclist was killed yesterday when he crashed into a car on Route 981 in Loyalhanna, state police said.

Daniel Smith, 55, of Lower Burrell, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 4:30 p.m. accident, state police at the Kiski Valley station said.

Mr. Smith had been riding north on Route 981 when a car, driven by Amber Citriniti, 22, of New Alexandria, pulled out from a driveway and into his path, police said. The collision caused Mr. Smith to go airborne, landing on the road.

Tax Vote To Add Intrigue To Primary

TALLAHASSEE - Democratic and Republican lawmakers may disagree on whether to "supersize" Florida's homestead tax exemption, but they voted together last week to add the question to the Jan. 29 presidential primary ballot.

Florida's politicos agree that the combination should boost voter turnout from both of the major parties. But who ultimately will benefit from the pairing remains the subject of wide speculation.

On Thursday, Gov. Charlie Crist signed the bill that places the proposed constitutional amendment on the Jan. 29 ballot. If approved by 60 percent of voters, the amendment would gradually phase out the state's "Save Our Homes " property-tax cap, replacing it over time with a larger homestead exemption. The measure could lower taxes by up to $16 billion.

Grad takes chance on communications biz

MILFORD — If Delaware Valley High School senior Ryan Balton, 17, fulfills his career wish, he will be a well-known media personality.

The son of Terry and Bruce Balton, of Milford, Mr. Balton plans to pursue a career in communications, such as journalism and broadcast television, though he is keeping his options open.

“I’d like to dip my toes in every type of media,” said Mr. Balton, who will be attending the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

Village originally named Petersburg

History states that in 1811, there were only two houses in Elysburg. In 1876, there were about 40 residences and a population of about 200 people. Elysburg was first named Petersburg for Peter Haas, a Revolutionary War soldier who laid out the town.

In tracing the history of Ralpho Township, the period of time from 1772-1283 is a bit confusing because it was named Augusta Township. From 1785 to 1788 it was named Catawissa Township. From 1788 to 1789 it was Ralpho Township. Then, from 1789 to 1883, it was named Shamokin Township. The reason it was Ralpho for only a year was due to the objection that Ralpho sounded strange — the name came from the parish of Ralpho in County Donegal, Ireland. Then, in 1883, the name was changed back to Ralpho Township.

In the 1700s, Jacob and Casper Reed came to what is now known as Reed’s Station. They were taxed in 1778. Adjoining the Reed tract on the east were three tracts of land named Stratford, Vauxhall, which was patented to David Shakespear on Dec. 31, 1772 and Shakespear’s Woods on Aug. 4, 1773. In 1789, John Dieter Heller purchased Stratford. Benjamin Ayres purchased 140 acres of the Vauxhall tract in 1796. In 1813, Jacob Zimmerman purchased the remainder of Vauxhall.

PRESCOTT - All four Yavapai County Sheriff's Office K-9 dogs are out of service because their handlers allegedly participated in the hazing of their co-worker during the April 11 K-9 training at the Navajo Army Depot near Flagstaff.

Cmdr. Scott Mascher said a YCSO K-9 officer filed a complaint claiming that some participants held him down while others partially shaved his head.

"There were multiple agencies involved, probably 20 to 30 people in the class," he said. "After class, they were all in the barracks and they held him down and cut some of his hair. There had been some drinking and he reported it."

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) -- Anna Nicole Smith, the former Playboy playmate whose bizarre life careened from marrying an octogenarian billionaire to the untimely death of her son, died Thursday after collapsing at a South Florida hotel, one of her lawyers said.

Smith, 39, collapsed and was unresponsive while staying at the Seminole Hard Rock Cafe Hotel and Casino, said the attorney, Ron Rale. She was rushed to a hospital.

"She checked in Monday at 8 p.m. as a guest. She was due to check out tomorrow," said Danielle Giordaano, a spokeswoman for the hotel.

• Bishop Verot High School graduate Mike Myers, a 27-year-old first baseman with the Birmingham Barons, drove in a career-high five runs Tuesday when the affiliate of the Chicago White Sox beat the Carolina Mudcats 12-4. He was 2-for-5, with a grand slam and three runs scored.

• Fort Myers resident Daniel Smith, a left-handed pitcher with the Mississippi Braves, is 4-2 and leads the Southern League with a 1.94 ERA. He's also third in WHIP, at 1.12.
