The best show in town this month is in Central Park. Angela Park first, Wie close to worst at Women's Open

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - LPGA Tour rookie Angela Park birdied her first three holes and hung on for a 3-under-par 68 yesterday, leaving the 18-year-old in the lead of the U.S. Women's Open after the first round for the second consecutive major.

Michelle Wie continued her free fall, and 12-year-old Alexis Thompson played carefree until it was too dark to continue.

Thompson, the youngest qualifier in U.S. Women's Open history, three-putted the 18th green for a bogey that put her at 3-over par after nine holes, a respectable start considering she played the tougher back nine first.

Auction is big draw for area farmers

GREENLEAF Farm implements, pickups, cars and trailers filled the field between Deuster Street and State 57/32 on the north end of Greenleaf on June 20 for an auction at the Jason Gilson farm.

It was a day made for a sale, and a lot of folks were looking some for bargains, others for price trends.

Dillon Lefeber, 13, was looking to pick up a few bucks, and did. Most of his work was done before the people and the auctioneers from Miller and Company began.

Local woman recalls war years for her granddaughter

Editor?s note: When Jeanene Peulen wrote a letter to her granddaughter upon her graduation from high school this year it became an historical document of sorts.

She recalled her own high school days as the former Jeanene Allen who graduated from Macon (Miss.) High School in 1946. Her memories include a time of sorrow and sacrifice during World War II and ultimate relief when the global conflict ended.

Jeanene now lives in Hudson with her husband of 58 years, Dick Peulen, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and native of the St. Croix River Valley.

Partnership with Denmark-based Lundbeck continues Gene Logic?s new drug strategy

Gaithersburg-based Gene Logic Inc. announced a partnership Thursday with another drug company that will aid it in a new business strategy.

The company has entered into an agreement with Denmark-based H. Lundbeck A/S that allows it to develop drug candidates that Lundbeck is no longer interested in pursuing.

The strategy is called drug repositioning and allows Gene Logic to do work on drugs that Lundbeck discontinued for reasons other than safety.

EU court weighs in on cheese

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Parmesan or Parmigiano? The difference is lost on most consumers -- as long as lots of it is grated on some al dente pasta. At the European Union's highest court, however, food is politics -- and big business.

An adviser to the European Court of Justice said Thursday that Germany did not have to prosecute cheese producers who market some hard cheeses as ''Parmesan,'' even if it does not originate from Italy's fabled countryside around the city of Parma.

On the other hand, the same adviser said that Germany had failed to prove that Parmesan is a generic term different from the already-protected ''Parmigiano Reggiano'' wording.

U.S. military deaths in Iraq at 3,571

As of Thursday, June 28, 2007, at least 3,571 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven military civilians. At least 2,931 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.

The AP count is five higher than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Thursday at 10 a.m. EDT.

The British military has reported 156 deaths; Italy, 33; Ukraine, 18; Poland, 20; Bulgaria, 13; Spain, 11; Denmark, seven; El Salvador, five; Slovakia, four; Latvia, three; Estonia, Netherlands, Thailand, two each; and Australia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Romania, South Korea, one death each.
