Hardin will be returning to Cal for his senior season, which is great news for Ben Braun and the Golden Bears but an even better development for Hardin. A boring team, the grind-it-out, all-business San Antonio Spurs had their way with the Cleveland Cavaliers, a group that seven of the eight playoff contenders in the Western Conference could have beaten.

This was anti-climax. The Spurs won the championship in the second round, against the Phoenix Suns. The rest of it was set, since no other team left could pose a real threat. Not the Utah Jazz, and certainly not the Cavaliers.

For those of us still paying attention mainly because we dont have lives the pundits went on and on about the virtues of reseeding during the playoffs. But according to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, he never ponied up $88,953 in state taxes for 2003.

The state recently filed a lien of $109,568 against Iverson for the back taxes, plus penalties. There is a process by which the state can go after the money, through the attorney general's office, but this matter hasn't gotten to that point yet, says Stephanie Weyant, a spokeswoman for the Department of Revenue. Iverson's spokesman did not return our call yesterday to see whether the hard-partying point guard, now with the Denver Nuggets, is planning to come up with the scratch.

* Iverson, meanwhile, is expected at Saturday's Cage Fury Fighting Championship at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall.
