My Corner: Green tea: Snake oil or floor wax?

Saturday, June 23, 2007

The message came loud and clear through the television on one of those rare summer nights I wasn't in search of baseball."Feel like sneezing? Try this product with green tea added ... Hungry, but don't want to be? Use this, with green tea and hoodia ... Want to give your floors that like-new look? Try green tea-flavored Mopso ..."Green tea? What in the name of Oprah is this stuff? And hoodia? Is that like a hoodie for women, designed by those seeing collegiate softball players wearing visors inst...

Research provides enough science to pique one's interest in the product, but also provides plenty of reasons to wonder if this is yet another shortcut to health, much like oat bran was in the 1980s, anything labeled low cholesterol (not knowing if it were good or bad cholesterol) in the 1990s, or patent medicines were in the 1880s.According to the University of Maryland Medical Center's Web site, population-based studies indicate green tea can help...

Geraldo is off-base; new law doesn't do enough about meth

Friday, June 22, 2007

Geraldo Rivera has to have the biggest inferiority complex going, or he is deliberately trying to become the Al Sharpton of the Hispanic community. Any time a person speaks out on the enforcement of our immigration laws, he immediately brands the person speaking out as a racist particularly oriented against Hispanics; but watching him try to defend his position against a skilled opponent points out just how wrong he is.

Then he jumps to the defense of Paris Hilton, saying she's being picked on, how easy others get off and how it isn't as if she actually hurt someone. If he had his way, this girl would be an example of of what you can get away with if you are rich and famous, once again reinforcing the premise that the poor are losers and the rich winners.

As a person many young women would seek to emulate, wouldn't you think Hilton should be held to a higher standard? It's not as though 23 days in what amounts to a modified daycare center is going to warp her for life.
