The Volusia County School Board will review a plan Tuesday that calls for nearly $1.4 million worth of improvements to athletic facilities at six high schools, including installation of bleachers and restrooms.
"It's not dramatic; it's an incremental step," said school facilities director Pat Drago. She will present the plan to the board when it meets at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the School Administrative Complex, 200 N. Clara Ave.
Until now, Drago said, the school district provided athletic facilities designed for physical education classes and left other improvements to booster clubs.

WEST PALM BEACH — Looks like that "hurricane-resistant" construction is suddenly popular with office tenants.
Wells Fargo Insurance Services will lease 17,951 square feet in a new office building in Vista Center office park in suburban West Palm Beach.
The building, by Procacci Development, is built to withstand 185-mph winds and includes backup generator power, said Debra Kremblas, Procacci vice president. Wells Fargo joins other top companies at Vista seeking shelter from the storm, including State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance and Oasis Outsourcing.

At today's County Commission meeting, commissioners will discuss a proposal to create a utilities task force. The meeting begins at 4:30 p.m. in board chambers of the Government Services Building at 1769 E. Moody Blvd.
Suggested by Commissioner Milissa Holland, the group would review the county's existing facilities and future plans for water, wastewater and reuse utility projects.
Holland said the idea is part of the commission's job to keep track of how taxpayer money is spent.

Another residential project has been proposed for the Flagler Village area north of downtown Broward Boulevard.
Stanton-Pender of Flagler Village I, LLC, submitted plans to the city for a project called Heights at Flagler Village. The project would have 46 multifamily units at 730 NE Fourth Ave.
City staff will go over the plans in a public meeting at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the city's planning and zoning conference room at 700 NW 19th Ave.

FORT PIERCE — As a 13-year-old growing up in Puerto Rico, Ernie Marquez built his own ham radio and sent out a message into the unknown. His first response was from Pennsylvania.
"It amazed me," he said. "This thing I put together got me all the way out there. It amazed me and it still does."
