Conservative, good; liberal, bad ? or not?

Tuesday, June 26, 2007

Impatient driver is waiting at intersection as pedestrian crosses in front of him. Pedestrian is slow. Driver leans from his window and yells, ?Get out of the street you (bleep) liberal.?

As I said, the story ? I picked it up in a magazine somewhere ? probably didn?t happen. But it sure feels true, doesn?t it?

We are, or so we have lately been told, no longer a nation of red, white and blue. Now we are simply red and blue ? squishy, effete, egg-headed, godless and liberal along the coasts; principled, tough, instinctive, God-fearing and conservative in between. It is a mantra that has been repeated to such a degree that nobody bothers to question it anymore: conservatism is triumphant, liberalism is spent.

Forget drawbacks; he's rich

Tuesday, June 26, 2007

That was Bloomberg in a self-deprecating moment, John Heilemann wrote in New York magazine last December.

Forum Editorial: Walaker?s had a good first year

Tuesday, June 26, 2007

The mayor of North Dakota?s largest, most vibrant city has to be a leader. Occasionally, he has to take positions that rattle cages and upset special interests. His priority has to be the overall well-being of the entire city, not the sometimes parochial or selfish concerns of a specific neighborhood.

After a year on the job, Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker measures up. Not only has he brought an impressive aura of calm credibility to the office, he?s also taken full advantage of the sound urban foundation that was built by his predecessor, Bruce Furness. As former public works director, Walaker was a major player in that successful collaborative process. He knows how the city works. He?s learned in a year how the policy-making arm of city government, the mayor and Commission, guides the nuts and bolts and gears of a strong municipality.

If Walaker was the face of flood-fighting for a decade, he has become in the last year the face of Fargo. His low-key manner fits his large physical presence. When he travels, either to Bismarck or to national mayoral meetings, he carries Fargo?s banner with pride and style.

What if the notion that conservatism reigns is hype?
