Jen is a nurse; Gary was a maintenance worker at St. Coletta's. They also owned the Spiffy Cleaners Service and were raising two kids. They spent every free second at their beloved cabin on Squirrel Lake near Minoqua.

Nearly a year ago, the family was floating on the lake on a hot July day, when Gary turned to his wife and said, "It doesn't get any better than this."

For Gary, it wouldn't.

St. Johns volunteer firefighter dies while assisting at blaze

A volunteer firefighter from St. Johns died Friday afternoon while battling a house fire in Victor Township.

Timothy Sanborn, 56, called "Grandpa" by firefighters, was operating the water pump of a firetruck when he suffered a massive heart attack.

The father of three daughters in their 20s died on his way to Sparrow Hospital.

Two Central Oregon hospitals offer patient satisfaction data

BEND, Ore. (AP) ? Patient satisfaction ratings are now available online at the two largest hospitals in Central Oregon.

Patient opinions about meals, doctors and other aspects of their care are being provided to the public by Cascade Healthcare Community, the parent company of St. Charles Medical Centers in Bend and Redmond.

The move is part of a national shift toward "transparency" on hospital information to improve care.

Understand; it's an illness. Help.

On the days when I feel like coming to town, I often run into people who say, "Oh, I haven't seen you in a long time. Where have you been?" To which I just shrug and reply, "Oh, I'm still around."

These usually are days when I don't have to push myself to go the grocery store, the drug store or the library. On these days I actually feel like going places -- I want to go somewhere, anywhere. It is the other days when it is so hard that I just stay home. Such is the nature of depression, one of the many elements of mental illness.

I do tell some friends when I run into them about my illness. I don't think it benefits anyone, least of all me, to hide this. It is just as devastating as breast cancer, in some ways maybe more so.

Update: Man Drives Truck Into River

PORTLAND - Police say the 55-year-old man who drove his truck into the Columbia River Tuesday was suffering from a medical condition.

Roy Clark of Gresham was traveling on Marine Drive when witnesses say he suddenly veered off the road and into the river.

Police say the driver lost control of the truck after suffering a heart attack and loosing consciousness. Amazingly, the cold water shocked Clark back into consciousness enough for him to scream for help as the truck began to sink.
