Diabetes cases up to 21 million U.S. adults

Sunday, June 24, 2007

CHICAGO -- The number of Americans with diabetes has climbed 5% annually since 1990, according to a U.S. government study.

Most of the surge in diabetes cases was because of patients developing the form of the disease known as type 2, which occurs mainly in adults age 40 and older who are overweight, according to the study released Saturday at a meeting of the American Diabetes Association in Chicago.

Study shows that treating risk factors slows the advance of Alzheimers

Sunday, June 24, 2007

WASHINGTON -- Treating risk factors such as high blood pressure and diabetes that are more commonly associated with heart disease substantially slowed the progression of cognitive decline in dementia patients, according to a new study that should prompt doctors to be more aggressive in targeting such vascular conditions.

The study also raises the prospect that treating those conditions in people with mild cognitive problems, but not actual dementia, could prevent dementia altogether or at least buy extra years of life without disabling symptoms.

The number of Americans with Alzheimers disease this year surpassed 5 million and is expected to increase by 450,000 new cases a year, reaching a total of 7.7 million by 2030.

Understand; it's an illness. Help.

Sunday, June 24, 2007

On the days when I feel like coming to town, I often run into people who say, "Oh, I haven't seen you in a long time. Where have you been?" To which I just shrug and reply, "Oh, I'm still around."

These usually are days when I don't have to push myself to go the grocery store, the drug store or the library. On these days I actually feel like going places -- I want to go somewhere, anywhere. It is the other days when it is so hard that I just stay home. Such is the nature of depression, one of the many elements of mental illness.

I do tell some friends when I run into them about my illness. I don't think it benefits anyone, least of all me, to hide this. It is just as devastating as breast cancer, in some ways maybe more so.
