Latin King of Comedy Paul Rodriguez to test funny bones Tuesday

Friday, June 29, 2007

Who is Paul Rodriguez and why is he so dang funny?

"Sometimes I wonder that myself," Rodriguez said playfully during a recent telephone interview.

"In truth, I'm just a guy who likes being a comedian. It's fun to be silly and make people laugh, especially when you get paid for it."

Luncheon Society enjoys good food, conversation

Friday, June 29, 2007

But as a hobby, McBarton calls up famous people and asks them to lunch.

And they show up. Sometimes more than once.

McBarton and two friends founded the invitation-only Luncheon Society a decade ago and today, its members gather several times a month in groups of 20 or 25 in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Palo Alto and soon, New York.

York Co.'s proceedings an open book

Friday, June 29, 2007

Reference the letter "York priorities," June 26, by Ron DoBias, regarding the artificial turf to be installed at Bailey Field. I appreciate his enthusiasm and concern for our senior population; he seems to have taken a direct interest by attending their meetings and understanding their positions. It is apparent he did not take the same interest when it comes to the funding of the artificial turf.

The county has made it very easy to find out why it approves or votes for one project over another, and you don't even have to attend a meeting - both Channel 46 and the York County Web site have archived video of regular meetings and work sessions.

The monies do not come from the county's general fund, but from excess impact aid that is held for the school district by the county because the school district cannot carry over funds from one year to the next. This was not York County money, it was the school's money.

The take on 'tip jars' tips toward no handout

Friday, June 29, 2007

Only one person called me a moron last week, so things went much better than expected.

My June 22 column questioned takeout joints that expect us to leave our well-earned cash in "tip jars." My basic argument was that tips are for services beyond the preparation of food. In most takeout situations, no such service is given. There is no waiter suggesting entrees or refilling a glass of tea, just a cashier ringing up the order. So why tip?

I readied myself for a barrage of name-calling from generous free-love types.
