I appreciate his enthusiasm and concern for our senior population; he seems to have taken a direct interest by attending their meetings and understanding their positions. It is apparent he did not take the same interest when it comes to the funding of the artificial turf.

The county has made it very easy to find out why it approves or votes for one project over another, and you don't even have to attend a meeting - both Channel 46 and the York County Web site have archived video of regular meetings and work sessions.

The monies do not come from the county's general fund, but from excess impact aid that is held for the school district by the county because the school district cannot carry over funds from one year to the next. This was not York County money, it was the school's money.

Amazed by fishin' data

Fishing is sport. In most takeout situations, no such service is given. There is no waiter suggesting entrees or refilling a glass of tea, just a cashier ringing up the order. Everything about “A Woman in Charge: The Life of Hillary Rodham Clinton,” says Serious Commitment, a phrase that has not been associated with the voracious and easily distracted half of the Watergate duo for a long time. But seven years after he started, here it is, a bona fide varsity-level hardback.

You can hear relief in his voice, and who could blame him? Like it or not, Bernstein is forever measured against the canny, tireless reporting and writing he did at the age of 28, after a break-in that ultimately ended a presidency. And he is forever measured against Bob Woodward, his onetime byline buddy and a modern publishing phenomenon. Stolid and utterly focused, Woodward has written more than a dozen books – six since Bernstein signed the Clinton deal in 1999, all of them bestsellers.

Is it fair to compare? No, it’s not. But the Bernstein of today has little choice but to contend with the Bernstein of yore, if only because the accomplishments of the latter are the reason we remain interested in him today. In the first few years after Watergate, Bernstein frittered away millions in a frenzy, on travel, home renovations, clothing and God knows what else, until he nearly went broke. His drinking became a problem. Nora Ephron portrayed him as the ultimate rake in “Heartburn,” a not-very-fictional account of the dissolution of their marriage.

Contract talks promise drama, plenty of tension

CHICAGO - Soon it will be time again to shake hands and come out fighting.

This contest pits grown men in business suits against each other. Artists highlighted in the show include Edvard Munch, Harald Sohlberg, Carl Larsson and Johan Christian Dahl. The five thematic, as well as chronological, groupings of the exhibit are Nordic Sublime, Close to Nature, In the Open Air, Evocative Landscape and Landscapes of the Mind.

Today's opening festivities, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., include free admission to the ticketed show; Nordic music by the Hardingfelelag group, May-Britt Forsberg and Flickorna Fem; midsummer activities; and a lecture by lead exhibit organizer Torsten Gunnarsson ($5), director of collections at Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.
