Indonesian VP OKs marijuana as spice

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

Cooks in parts of Indonesia—a nation that executes drug traffickers—say they use tiny amounts of crushed marijuana leaves or seeds as a spice in certain dishes.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Vice President Yusuf Kalla said there was "no way" Indonesia would legalize or decriminalize marijuana as some countries in western Europe have done.

"It is all right to use it as a food seasoning, but it should not be fully legalized," Kalla was quoted as saying by The Jakarta Post.

Anti-corruption, global relationships central to lender

Tuesday, June 26, 2007

WASHINGTON For years rumors of corruption surrounded an ambitious World Bank project for a system of reservoirs and water tunnels in the mountains of Lesotho in southern Africa. In 2002, the project director was convicted of graft and sent to jail.

But it took the bank another four years to bar two engineering companies convicted on bribery charges from getting future contracts, during which time they collected $14 million in fees from the bank. Combating corruption was a signature issue for Paul Wolfowitz in his two years as bank president.

But the corruption issue was also a source of anger at the bank, contributing to Wolfowitz's forced resignation last month amid charges of favoritism toward his bank employee girlfriend.

Glaxo to donate flu vaccine for poor

Tuesday, June 26, 2007

London - Pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline PLC has agreed to donate 50 million doses of H5N1 vaccine to the World Health Organization in an attempt to create a pandemic vaccine stockpile for poor countries, company officials announced Wednesday.

The vaccines will be delivered over a three-year period and should provide enough doses for 25 million people; two shots per person will be needed.

"This is excellent news," said Dr. John Oxford, a professor of virology at London's Queen Mary School of Medicine. "It's just what we need to reassure countries like Indonesia that they will get something in return from the viruses they provide, which will form the basis of these vaccines," Oxford said.
