That kitty on your sofa can trace her ancestry to Middle Eastern wildcats

Friday, June 29, 2007

WASHINGTON - Garfield, Morris and the Aristocats get the fame, but look to the origins of today's furry felines and you find "lybica," a Middle Eastern wildcat.

Domestic cats can be traced to wild progenitors that interbred well over 100,000 years ago, new research indicates.

"House cats - which includes fancy breeds and feral cats - those cats all form a genetic group that is virtually indistinguishable from ones in the Middle East," said Stephen J. O'Brien of the National Cancer Institute.

Brown picks Iraq war critics for Cabinet

Friday, June 29, 2007

LONDON (AP) - Britain's new prime minister has begun naming his cabinet, and his senior circle includes some prominent Iraq war critics.

Brown tapped David Miliband as Foreign Secretary. Miliband voted in favor of British participation in the Iraq war but has since voiced concerns about the conflict. He has also criticized Tony Blair's Middle East policy at times, arguing last summer that Blair should have insisted on an immediate cease-fire when Israel went to war with Hezbollah (hez-BUH'-lah) in Lebanon.

Brown also gave a foreign affairs post to Mark Malloch-Brown, the former deputy UN secretary-general. During his time at the UN, Malloch-Brown clashed with then US Ambassador John Bolton and derided the US approach to Darfur as "megaphone diplomacy."

Fayyad warns Islamic preachers

Friday, June 29, 2007

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- The new Palestinian prime minister delivered a stern warning Thursday to hundreds of Islamic preachers, including Hamas supporters: He won't tolerate calls for violence delivered from mosque pulpits and plans to collect militants' weapons.

Salam Fayyad's meeting with some 800 Muslim clergy marked the latest attempt to stem the influence of Hamas in the West Bank following the Islamists' violent takeover of Gaza this month. Security forces have arrested dozens of Hamas activists in the West Bank, and President Mahmoud Abbas is trying to dry up funding to Hamas with a review of all private organizations.

But Fayyad's crackdown on Hamas was complicated by Israel's hunt for gunmen from Abbas' Fatah movement in the West Bank city of Nablus. "We view this aggression as a way to undermine our efforts to provide security and end the chaos," Fayyad said.
