Three Lebanese soldiers killed in bomb explosion in refugee camp

Sunday, June 24, 2007

BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) - There's more fighting between Lebanese soldiers and Islamic militants holed up for more than a month in a Palestinian refugee camp north of Beirut.

Heavy machine-gun fire and bursts of artillery shells have reverberated across the camp outside Tripoli.

At least 79 Lebanese soldiers and an undetermined number of militants have been killed since the fighting broke out May 20th. Three soldiers were killed Saturday when a bomb exploded in the camp as the army was dismantling bombs, booby traps and land mines.

Lebanese troops clash with militants

Sunday, June 24, 2007

BEIRUT, Lebanon --Lebanese troops clashed with suspected al-Qaida-inspired militants holed up in a neighborhood of the northern port city of Tripoli early Sunday, and at least four people were killed, security officials said.

The clashes Saturday night and again early Sunday in the Tripoli neighborhood of Abu Samra marked a new escalation in the army's battle with Islamic militants after the fighting shifted once again from the bomb-ravaged, besieged Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr el-Bared on Tripoli's outskirts.

An army soldier, a policeman and two others were killed in the confrontation, which began with troops laying siege to a building where the gunmen had taken refugee after nighttime clashes in the area, the security officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Were bonds issued or sold?

Sunday, June 24, 2007

Page B1 of Friday’s Bristol Herald Courier informed readers that Sullivan County "purchased $6.5 million in bonds, to buy land for industrial parks." I suspect that the writer of the story may not have known a whole lot about bonds.

Governmental agencies from local to national, as well as large corporations, sell (or "issue") bonds to get the money they need to finance various projects. The people who buy the bonds pay the $6.5 million (or whatever amount) and receive periodic interest income which is paid to the bond owner, or "holder" during the term of the bond. It works kind of like a mortgage: the money has to be paid back to the holder in the future.

I hope the reporter is wrong about this and that I am correct, because I have bought several bonds to provide a steady income for my retirement.
