LOS ANGELES ? Paris Hilton promised to become a better person when she got out of jail. The more important issue, though, may be whether she can be a better driver.

Will the hotel heiress have the good sense to hand her keys to someone else after a night of club-hopping, or risk another stay at the gray-bar hotel?

She says she's wised up, but the intersection of Hollywood and wine (not to mention beer and booze) has long spelled trouble for celebrities who take the wheel, meaning it could be harder than even Hilton realizes to find another way home.

For the cover shoot of Stockbridge-birthed Collective Soul’s upcoming album, “Afterwords,” band pal and Buckhead salon owner Richie Arpino assisted with hair and makeup.

Oh, and he shot the cover.

Arpino, who in recent years has taken up photography, producing annual calendars for charity (his upcoming 2008 concept, “Body and Art” combines nudes posing in front of paintings), was recently commissioned to do the shoot by pal and Soul lead singer Ed Roland.

It's hard to criticize the state's stepped-up effort to crack down on illegal gambling machines. Crime is crime, after all. So let's not complain as the state starts taking a whack at betting machines that populate truck stops and pool halls and are lovingly known as "cherry masters."

But while the crackdown is fine, the insincere arguments for it are worth criticizing. They're as flimsy as the dreams of gamblers who waste their money on the machines.In case you haven't heard, the state is creating a 16-member police force to bust businesses that boost their bottom lines with a few back-room cherry masters.
