Column: Laboring in Bush’s America

Tuesday, June 26, 2007

When Marjorie McMillan, as reported in Time, learned about the Supreme Court ruling concerning Lilly Ledbetter’s suit under Title VII, she remarked, “What is wrong with this court? It just doesn’t live in the real world.”

Workers had better get ready for more slaps in the face as the Bush administration, along with appointed allies on the Supreme Court, work in tandem to further degrade America’s laborers. Congress may be controlled by Democrats, but they are a spineless bunch who can only talk about progressive legislation instead of fighting the powers that strangle ordinary Americans.

The Supreme Court, as it wraps up the end of its session this week, has changed dramatically. If the Bush administration is a disaster on all levels (and it is), then its legacy on the court will live on with the appointment of John Roberts and Samuel Alito. These arch-conservatives know no bounds in interpreting the law based on their ideology.

Parked behind the open back of the 31-foot trailer, a trio of identical, bright blue racing cars awaited their drivers.

Inside the trailer, Laura Schenck helped her children, Samantha, 11, Danielle, 9 and Jake, 6, suit up as she kept an eye on 1?-year-old Brock, who darted in and out of the vehicle, then struggled to lift Jake?s racing helmet over his head.
