PHOENIX -- Brad Penny continued his mastery of the Arizona Diamondbacks and the National League. The right-hander earned his 10th win and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Arizona 8-1 on Monday night.

He allowed one run and four hits in eight innings and improved to 7-2 against the Diamondbacks. Penny (10-1) lowered his NL-leading ERA to 2.04. His only loss this season came against the Los Angeles Angels on May 18.

Jonathan Broxton pitched the ninth to complete the five-hitter.

PHOENIX After spending the past season and a half as the Los Angeles Dodgers' first baseman, Nomar Garciaparra will move to third base, perhaps as early as Friday.

"We're trying to get ourselves in a position where we can be the best we can be, and that option right now is there for us," manager Grady Little said. "Nomar's 100 percent on board. He's been over there before. It's not a strange place for him."

Baseball Notable New York Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca was suspended for two games and fined $2,000 yesterday after a tantrum aimed at umpire Marvin Hudson on Saturday in Oakland.

Lo Duca appealed the penalty and cannot be disciplined until after a hearing is held. He was in the starting lineup for last night's game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Texas Rangers put righthander Vicente Padilla on the 15-day disabled list with an injured right triceps.

The agreements include a tax-revenue sharing plan with Phoenix because the ballpark is planned on 151 acres of Glendale-owned land in Phoenix near Cardinal's stadium. PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks are alone atop the NL West for the first time since April 30th after whipping Baltimore 8 to 3 for their seventh win in nine games. Stephen Drew and Chad Tracy homered. Eric Byrnes drove in two runs.

The victory, coupled with San Diego's 4-2 loss to Boston, gave Arizona a 1-game lead over the Padres. The Diamondbacks have a game and a-half edge over the Los Angeles Dodgers, who come to Phoenix for a 4-game series beginning Monday.

The Diamondbacks built an early lead and coasted behind Doug Davis, who is 5-8 with the win. He allowed two runs and ten hits in six and a-third innings.

When you think of Giants all-time greats, the usual suspects come to mind: Mays, Bonds, McCovey, Marichal. Rod Beck might not even make your A list. But for anyone who covered the Giants in the 1990s, Beck would be right near the top. An all-time, larger-than-life, heart-of-gold great. Beck was found dead in his Arizona home during the weekend. He was only 38, far younger than many of the current Giants and much, much too young to die.

It seems odd that he was still so young, because he was such a throwback. In an era of uniformity and in a sport that doesn't encourage much individuality, Beck was one of a kind. The Fu Manchu mustache, the frizzy mullet, the swinging arm, the beer and smokes, the cool "Shooter" nickname - he had the whole package. He was a character in an age of conformity.

"People say there aren't any characters in baseball anymore," said Mike Quade, who managed Beck when he was pitching at Triple-A Iowa in 2003. "But he's proof that's not true."

SAN FRANCISCO -- It's still easy to envision Rod Beck's messy mullet, his Fu Manchu mustache and the nastiest sight of all -- his split-fingered fastball.

It's far too difficult to picture Beck, the Giants' charismatic closer in the 1990s, being found dead in his Phoenix home Sunday at the age of 38.

"It's just a real tragedy," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy, who coached Beck on the San Diego Padres when "Shooter" finished his 13-year career in 2004. "It's hit hard. It's so sad. It's a sad day for all of us."

Roy Halladay tries to win his fifth straight decision this evening when the Toronto Blue Jays open a four-game series with the Minnesota Twins at the Metrodome.

Halladay has been sensational since returning from appendectomy surgery, winning four of his five starts while pitching to a 3.58 earned run average in that time. Halladay's latest win came on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, as he allowed a run and six hits in eight innings to improve to 8-2, while lowering his ERA to 4.08.

The right-hander is a perfect 5-0 against the Twins with a 2.20 ERA in nine games, seven of which have been starts.

White Sox Aim To Halt Skid Agianst Devil Rays

(Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox try and avoid their sixth straight loss this evening when they open a four-game set with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Tropicana Field.

Chicago has dropped 22 of its last 27 games and was swept in a three-game set over the weekend by the Cubs at U.S. Cellular Field, culminating with a 3-0 shutout on Sunday.

White Sox starter Jose Contreras (5-8) allowed two runs on 10 hits, while walking none and fanning three over seven innings.
