CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - A budget rocket developed by the founder of Internet financial services firm PayPal blasted off on Tuesday from a remote island in the South Pacific, bolstering hopes of cheaper fares to fly cargo, and eventually people, into space.

The 68-foot (21-meter) booster rocket called Falcon 1 lifted off at 9:10 p.m. EDT (0110 GMT Wednesday) from Omelek Island on a U.S. military missile test range at Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands and successfully arrived in space minutes later.

About five minutes into the flight, a problem cropped up with the booster's second-stage engine, which shut down early due to an unexpected roll, said Space Exploration Technologies chief Elon Musk.

A rescue dog picked up Michael Auberry's scent less than a mile from the campsite where he had wandered away from his troop Saturday. The disappearance touched off an intensive search involving bloodhounds, heat-seeking helicopters and dozens of volunteers on foot.

"He saw the helicopters and heard people calling him, but he yelled back and they didn't hear him," said his father, Kent Auberry, of Greensboro. "He's very tired. He's very dehydrated. But he came through this in unbelievable fashion."

SALEM, Ore. No happy ending for Cinderella

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

The ones from Winthrop, at least. There's one from Oregon still standing mighty tall in the NCAA Tournament.

Diminutive but destructive Tajuan Porter, the shortest man on the floor at 5-foot-6, broke open a close game by making his first four shots of the second half Sunday, all from long range. That spurt, along with Aaron Brooks' 22 points and a smothering defense led Oregon over the frazzled Eagles 75-61 and eliminated the last remaining double-digit seed from the tournament.

The third-seeded Ducks (28-7), who have won more games than any Oregon team since the 1944-45 squad won 30, will play seventh-seeded UNLV in the semifinals of the Midwest Regional in St. Louis.

Relay for Life event getting more interest

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

Grimes County's second annual Relay for Life is generating plenty of interest.Allison Marshall, Irene Landriault and other organizers of this year's event say that they are able to build the success of last year's initial event to draw even more participation this year. One area where that is clear is in the number of teams that are participating in the Relay. Last year had 18 teams; as of March 7, Mitchell and Landriault had 31 teams already signed up.

The American Cancer Society wants cancer survivors to be honored for their victory in the fight against cancer. Top survivors will be honored, as well as Caregiver of the Year, per vote of local survivors.

The ACS also has a way to help build online Relay for Life electronic communities, nominate local survivors for recognition and more. That is all online at www.relayforlife.org/relay.And, the Examiner would like to hear from survivors as part of making an even bigger and better special section than last year. That includes pictures of all those 31 - or more teams in the Relay this year, survivor and caregiver stories and more.Survivors and caregivers are invited to contact Examiner editor Steve ...

For example, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the nation's largest retailer, is selling products ranging from patriotic picnic cups to hair accessories.

Richardson begins tour for support in Texas

Monday, March 19, 2007

DALLAS — At the start of a tour to try to capture the support of neighboring Texans, Democratic presidential hopeful and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson said Sunday that, if elected, he would work to raise the country's image around the world while improving wages and health care availability at home.

"I can get bipartisan support. I can bring Democrats and Republicans together. I can bring nations together," Richardson, a former congressman, ambassador and energy secretary in the Clinton administration, told a small group of mainly Spanish language media Sunday.

With planned stops in San Antonio, Abilene and Austin this week, Richardson is trying to capture the support of neighboring Texas for several reasons. The state would have a better say in selecting presidential nominees if lawmakers move up the primary to Feb. 5. Texas also offers Richardson, the son of a Mexican mother and American father, a potential base of support in its growing Latino population.

HAPPY TAILS TIPS Give your pets tune-ups to ready them for spring

Monday, March 19, 2007

Spring officially arrives Wednesday! Time to plant flowers, dig out your summer clothes and get ready for warmer weather. While you are preparing for spring, dont forget your pets. They might need a "spring tune-up" as well.

● The first thing to consider is heartworm prevention. Dogs and cats should receive preventative medication routinely. This should be done all year long, every month, without fail. Use the stickers that come with the preventative medication, sign up for the e-mail reminder list, or tattoo it on your forehead if you have to - its that important.

However, if you have forgotten completely or missed a month here and there, now is the time to correct the problem. Call your veterinarian to discuss the best time for performing the blood test for your dog.

Marshall Alexander, 56, the only person aboard, went down in a snowy ravine west of Diamond Lake after radioing late Friday that he was lost and his Cessna 182 was low on fuel, the Civil Air Patrol said.

The pilot had survival equipment and a satellite telephone he used to call authorities and his wife, the patrol said.

Pump Station Goes West Of Flying Cow

Sunday, March 18, 2007

With hurricane season only three months away, the Wellington Village Council last Thursday approved an emergency resolution to begin construction on a new pump station, located west of Flying Cow Road and south of Southern Blvd. The resolution contracts Murray Logan Construction to build the station and includes a memorandum of understanding that the South Florida Water Management District would pay the $4.46 million cost.

The pump station was originally planned to be located east of Flying Cow Road. However, concerns raised last November by residents of the nearby Binks Forest neighborhood prompted the village and SFWMD to seek another location. The original proposal would have placed the 220-gallon-per-minute pump station within 25 feet of one home in the Hidden Creek community of Binks Forest.

According to the staff report, the C-1 Canal, which runs along Flying Cow Road, will be extended to connect to the C-51 Canal, which runs along Southern Blvd. During the rainy season, the pump will hasten the discharge of water from southern Wellingtons Basin B.

ROBERT LOPEZ: Anna's story made for TV

Sunday, March 18, 2007

I passed through the town of Mexia on my way back from a trip to Dallas last Memorial Day weekend.

Off the main drag on Texas 84, I saw Jim's Krispy Fried Chicken. I had seen it numerous times watching "E! True Hollywood Story." I stopped out of curiosity.

"My girlfriend and I were wondering," I said as I placed an order for a dozen yeast rolls, "is this where Anna Nicole Smith used to work?"

Gov. Crist's Accuser Is A Study In Contrasts

Sunday, March 18, 2007

It has the makings of a daytime TV talk show: She says the baby is his; he denies it.

Only this time, he is Charlie Crist, chief executive of Florida, three times a winner in statewide elections and a man who may someday have presidential aspirations.

She is Rebecca O'Dell Townsend, who remains largely unknown despite the wide attention given her claim that Crist fathered a girl she gave up for adoption in 1989.
