SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Clay County Leader publisher Phil Major has been elected president of Texas Press Association.

He was elected Saturday at the group's 128th summer convention in San Antonio.

Major succeeds Marshall Day, who's publisher of The Gatesville Messenger. Day becomes chairman of the association board.

Investigators believe the man, over the past couple of weeks, has swiped nearly $1,300 worth of electric toothbrushes from a Target store.

Hedge-fund bailout may cost firm less

Brokerage Bear Stearns may put up $1.6 billion to rescue another one of its money-losing hedge funds, half as much as it offered last week, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.

The size of the bailout dropped after the Bear Stearns High-Grade Structured Credit Fund found buyers for some assets and creditors sold others, said the sources, who declined to be identified because they aren't authorized to comment for the firm.

Bear Stearns, the biggest U.S. broker to hedge funds, said Friday it would assume $3.2 billion of loans to prevent lenders from liquidating assets.

Man arrested in stabbing

BAY POINT -- Contra Costa sheriff's deputies arrested a man Monday night in the stabbing of another man in the arm.

The stabbing occurred during a fight in the 200 block of Maureen Circle, to which deputies responded at 6:05 p.m., sheriff's Sgt. Ethan Katz said.

Deputies were trying to determine whether any other weapons were involved in the fight.

Blaze Rips Through Cocoa Trailer

Softball players can play on two different teams

I am a parent, coach and member of a community softball league. Our organization has had the pleasure of watching numerous players join the league as novices and progress into excellent ballplayers. As these players get older some have high hopes of playing for their high school and continuing to play at college level. The league I am affiliated with would have no greater joy than to see these girls fulfill those hopes and dreams. Our league strives to teach these girls the skills they will need at those levels.

It has come to my attention that many of our older players have been told by the high school coaches that they have to choose between playing for our league or playing for their school. The coaches (at the school) are telling them if they play for the school they are not allowed to play in our league. This is only partially true. According to IHSAA rules they cannot play both at the same time. But any player who plays for their school may sign up in our league. That player will then join their team within our organization once their school's season is over.

Delegate Bob Marshall, R-13th District, says the current transportation legislation is unconstitutional and strains member locality bond ratings. However, acclaimed lawyers, including Governor Kaine say it is constitutional. The reason for the strain is that the related debt does not have a dedicated revenue source backing it. If the delegate and his colleagues would devote some energy on 'can do' instead of 'can't do' perhaps we could get a comprehensive transportation program moving. The last time Virginia did this was under Governor Baliles in 1988.

One of the conventional ways in which metro areas have dealt with transportation problems going back to the 50s has been through the use of 'revenue bonds' which by their name are attached to a dedicated revenue source -- money that is raised for a specific purpose and used exclusively for that purpose -- usually a gasoline (user) tax. For several years, conservative members of the Virginia General Assembly -- the ones who are experts in municipal finance -- have called for a 5 cent a gallon gas tax hike to begin to fund our way out of the regional transportation mess.

However, other legislators, year-after-year, refuse to provide dedicated funding. And until we get more legislators who will address this most pressing problem, NVTA is not going to work.

HOUSTON (AP) - Harris County sheriff's authorities say a woman died from injuries she suffered while apparently trying to stop a wrecker driver from towing her car.

Lieutenant John Martin says the 53-year-old woman saw the tow truck in front of her home late Saturday and ran outside to try to stop it.

Martin tells the Houston Chronicle that witness accounts vary but the woman was somehow struck -- either by climbing or hanging onto the vehicle.

Famous choir visits Kirtland

The legendary Mormon Tabernacle Choir made an unpublicized stop in Kirtland Sunday to sing a few songs for a small crowd outside the Historic Kirtland Village Visitors Center.

Choir members also spent part of their day touring historical sites in the city.

Fresh off a concert in Chautauqua, N.Y., the choir will also perform a show today with the Orchestra at Temple Square in Cuyahoga Falls at Blossom Music Center.

WASHINGTON — As lawmakers return to the Senate to try to come up with an immigration reform bill that will please border security hawks, union workers and big employers, the debate could take its toll on 2008 presidential candidates who dare to ignore the Latino vote.

Registered Hispanic voters — numbering about 9 million — are poised to make a show of force in the 2008 presidential election. But with dissatisfaction over the immigration debate on the rise, Republicans who had gained ground in 2000 and 2004, largely thanks to candidate George W. Bush, are seeing their once-expanding Hispanic base shrink.

"Some of the politicians on the anti-illegal immigrant side of the fence have said some things that are not just directed at immigrants, but at all Latinos," charged Brent Wilkes, executive director of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). "In the end, it could energize the Latino vote. It's certainly hurt a lot of the goodwill President (George W.) Bush helped to establish within the Republican Party."

Meningitis Outbreak

Oklahoma State health officials say the third case of meningitis on a college campus in Oklahoma was reported this week.

On Tuesday, a female freshman at East Central University in Ada was diagnosed with the infection. She was taken to a local hospital, and people in her immediate circle of contact were also treated.

Health officials say in this case, the infection does not appear to be life-threatening and the public is not at risk.

NEW YORK -- A blooper to right, an inexperienced outfielder and Jose Reyes' speed became a messy combination for the Oakland Athletics.

Reyes led off the bottom of the first inning with a popup down the line that Jack Cust, normally a designated hitter, couldn't run down. Reyes stretched it into a double and Cust's throw to second sailed into left field. Reyes, who went into second headfirst, scrambled to his feet and scored on the two-base error.

It was downhill from there for Oakland. The New York Mets sailed to a 10-2 victory behind John Maine on Sunday to complete their first series sweep at home since last August.
