WildBlue's new satellite boosts capacity

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Satellite broadband company WildBlue Communications Inc. said Tuesday it turned on for the first time its own satellite, greatly expanding its capacity.

The Denver-based company provides broadband Internet access to rural U.S. homes and businesses, using available capacity on a Canadian TV satellite to beam to dishes similar to those used for TV service.

WildBlue had filled up all available subscriber slots in many parts of the country, particularly in coastal states. The new satellite, WildBlue-1, will let the company accept new subscribers in those areas.

Wade floors 'em at Richards High with generous donations

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

What a day it was at Richards High School in Oak Lawn on Monday. There on a stage in the school's gym speaking to an assembly of students was Academy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson ("Dreamgirls"). That was followed by a performance by Grammy Award-winning recording artist Kanye West.

But the biggest star of the show, both literally and figuratively, was a 2000 graduate of Richards who's made quite a name for himself since leaving the school. That person is Dwyane Wade, a star in the National Basketball Association who led the Miami Heat to the league's championship last season and was named most valuable player in the championship series.

Wade couldn't be at the festivities. He's recovering from a severe shoulder injury. But through the wonders of electronics, the students could see Wade on a 200-inch video screen set up in the gym. From Florida, he could see what was going on at his old school.

Politics, sports clash in Sonics arena bid

Monday, March 19, 2007

SEATTLE — A bid by the city's oldest major pro sports team for taxpayer funding to build a new arena has hit a snag over gay politics.

The SuperSonics, celebrating 40 years in the NBA this year, have asked the Legislature for a $300 million tax subsidy for a new home in suburban Renton. Team officials have threatened to move the Sonics, and the Seattle Storm of the Women's National Basketball Association, if public financing is denied.

A subsidy bill faced an uncertain fate even before reports surfaced last month, first in The Seattle Times, that two of the teams' out-of-state minority owners have been big contributors to a national group that opposes same-sex marriage.

Spring is season for sports, spas and shopping in Toronto

Sunday, March 18, 2007

TORONTO Call this the city of all seasons. And nowhere is that more apparent than spring in Toronto, where the chilly ice warriors meet the boys of summer.During April, three professional sports teams Blue Jays baseball, Maple Leafs hockey and Raptors basketball are at play in Toronto, all within a few blocks of each other.

Fill your other down time with a spa experience and shopping, both boosted by a beneficial exchange rate.Toronto has a mild late winter for Canada, since its climate is tempered along the Great Lakes on the same latitude as northern California. You'll be well-insulated, too, if you do as the 4.7 million Torontoans do by taking the underground walkway, The PATH, that leads to about 16 miles of subterranean shopping and services around the six-story Toronto Eaton Centre. You can also board heated buses by the Toronto Transit Commission or enclosed "red rocket" streetcars.

Competition, TechnologyEnhance the DVR

Friday, March 16, 2007

Digital video recorders, which transformed television watching for millions of households, are undergoing a makeover as they become a major weapon wielded by cable, satellite and telephone companies in their battle for market share in the pay-TV business.

Telecom companies are adding a range of new features to the devices, which were originally launched in the late 1990s by TiVo Inc. and gained popularity for their ability to let people record and pause live TV. Users can now do such other things as program their DVR from afar by cellphone or computer to record a favorite show. Some recorders also now allow viewers to download content off the Internet or record a show in one room and watch it on a TV in another.

The competition is heating up thanks in part to technological advances that allow phone, TV and Internet features to be combined. The speed with which the DVR is morphing also reflects the growing importance of new technology in the pay-TV business as the market becomes saturated and telephone companies emerge as new competitors.

Weitzman excited about 'Body' of work

Friday, March 16, 2007

"The As If Body Loop," which opens this week at the Humana Festival of New American Plays, contrasts the ingrained American myth of the individual -- the "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" view -- with the notion of sharing responsibility for each other.

Playwright Ken Weitzman attributes the idea for his comedy -- about a woman afflicted with a mysterious, icy illness whose family must save the world to save her -- to his wife, Amy Cook, a theater director and professor at Emory University.

Cook's area of study involves examining works of theater using neurobiological knowledge about how humans learn and use language and experience live performances. She told Weitzman about the "as if body loop" theory of neuroscientist Antonio Damasio, director of the Brain and Creativity Institute at the University of Southern California.

Warriors center a U.S. citizen

Thursday, March 15, 2007

Foyle, who migrated at age 15 to the U.S. from the tiny Caribbean island of Canouan, said he wanted to become a citizen of the country in which he has invested so much, and which has invested so much in him.

"I come from humble beginnings. When you look back on that, and come to where we are now, it has been a truly amazing journey," said the soft-spoken, engaging 32-year-old.

Foyle, who may have a gift for understatement, said his journey to becoming an American was likely different from others attending the ceremony. It may, in fact, be a singularly unlikely story among the collection of unlikely stories that make up the American experience.

Milwaukee Bucks management was grading Terry Stotts on a curve because he had to handle so many key injuries this season. That still wasn't enough for him to keep his job.

The Bucks fired Stotts on Wednesday after less than two full seasons with the team. Milwaukee is last in the Central Division at 23-41 and among the NBA's worst defensive teams.

"Terry has done the best he could in a difficult situation, especially with all of our injuries," general manager Larry Harris said. "I felt it was in the best interest of our organization to make the decision now and move forward, rather than wait until the end of the regular season."

Google's YouTube signing smaller partnerships: NYT

Friday, March 2, 2007

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Google Inc. may be frustrated in efforts to reach comprehensive deals with major media companies such as NBC or Viacom Inc. to put their videos on YouTube, but it is signing up hundreds of smaller media partners, The New York Times reported on Friday.

Without specifying how many of those deals have been signed since their site was acquired by Google last fall, YouTube officials say they are adding more than 200 mostly small media compamies or sites a quarter, according to the Times.

Some of the partnerships have been announced publicly. On Monday, for instance, YouTube said that it had teamed up with the National Basketball Association to create a channel where the league would show authorized clips and where fans could upload short videos showcasing their best moves.
