NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City tourism officials have reached a deal with the Chinese government to join a select group of American destinations with permission to promote themselves in the Communist nation. MEYERS, Calif. (AP) -- Firefighters have slowed a raging forest fire on Lake Tahoe's south shore that has destroyed more than 225 structures, and are closer to pinpointing the cause of the blaze. Light winds Monday gave firefighters a badly needed jump on the inferno, and by late afternoon it was 40 percent contained, fire officials said. MEYERS, Calif. (AP) - Forestry officials say it could be Sunday before a raging wildfire near Lake Tahoe in California is fully contained.
The blaze has scorched almost 2,500 acres -- that's nearly four square miles. By early Monday evening, fire officials said the blaze was about 40% contained.
The fire has destroyed more than 200 buildings and forced hundreds of residents to flee.

A forest fire near Lake Tahoe's south shore continued to rage Tuesday after destroying more than 275 homes and buildings, but firefighters said they made progress is slowing the blaze and were closer to identifying its cause.
The danger to homes diminished overnight after firefighters got a badly needed leg up on the inferno, which was still burning along rugged, uninhabited slopes. As of Tuesday morning, the blaze was about 40 percent contained, fire officials said.
Authorities said they planned to allow residents whose houses were only moderately damaged to return home Tuesday and hoped to begin escorting residents to destroyed homes by Thursday.
