Goalie Anderson signs 2-year deal

The Panthers have their goaltending duo set for the 2007-2008 season as general manager/coach Jacques Martin signed goalie Craig Anderson to a two-year contract Monday. Anderson will backup newly acquired starter Tomas Vokoun.

The move was part of a busy day for the Panthers front office.

Florida tendered offers to six restricted free agents: RW Rob Globke, C Kamil Kreps, D Steve Montador, C Janis Sprukts, C Stephen Weiss and D Noah Welch.

Penguins not tendering offers to Penner, Ouellet

Michel Ouellet and Andrew Penner have probably played their last games in a Penguins uniform.

Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero announced on Monday that the team had made qualifying contract offers to six of its eight restricted free agents.

Colby Armstrong, Tim Brent, Erik Christensen, Ryan Lannon, Maxime Talbot and Ryan Whitney got offers.

Penny dominates D'backs as Dodgers win

PHOENIX -- Brad Penny continued his mastery of the Arizona Diamondbacks and the National League. The right-hander earned his 10th win and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Arizona 8-1 on Monday night.

He allowed one run and four hits in eight innings and improved to 7-2 against the Diamondbacks. Penny (10-1) lowered his NL-leading ERA to 2.04. His only loss this season came against the Los Angeles Angels on May 18.

Jonathan Broxton pitched the ninth to complete the five-hitter.

Passing the reins

Employees at Dallas-based Alpha Testing Inc. have been well aware the past few years that one of their colleagues, Brian Powell, a vice president, is being groomed and mentored to one day run and own the company.

Alpha tests soil for developers to see if land is contaminated. It also tests construction materials to make sure they meet building specifications.

OMAHA, Neb. W hen they're celebrating the 100th anniversary of the College World Series, baseball historians will look back on all the event's back-to-back champions.

They'll admire the USC Trojans, with their staggering 12 titles, 11 under legendary coach Rod Dedeaux. They'll coo over Texas' six titles and their big-school swagger. They'll see Louisiana State's five titles and smell the gumbo cooking outside Rosenblatt Stadium, year after year.

Then they'll get to Oregon State, and they'll stop.
