Just as Johnny Cash went behind the walls of Folsom Prison in 1968 to record his classic live album and bring a ray of light into the dark existence of society's outcasts, I, too, want to reach out to someone who has taken a wrong turn on life's journey and ended up behind bars.

So, I've decided to become a prisoner's pen pal.

I know what some of you are thinking: Scott, this is bound to end badly. You'll establish a long-distance friendship with a homicidal maniac who escapes from prison in the back of a laundry truck, breaks into a secluded suburban home, finds a cache of automatic weapons, steals a car, drives to your house and forces you at gunpoint to go on a multi-state crime spree before placing your severed head in a suitcase and burying it in the desert.

When temperatures rise, fashion disasters occur.

It happens every year. Summer has a way of messing with better judgment. Or perhaps bad decisions are simply more glaring when the coats and sweaters come off. Either way, I've spotted some troubling trends on the streets, as have many fashion experts.

The good news? There are plenty of warm days ahead to redeem yourselves.

A pack of shapely bodies — tightly tucked, fists clinched — cruises around the oval rink, skate wheels spinning.

Tiny shorts and tank tops show off pumping thighs and flexed arms. Crash-ready helmets hide locks of platinum, coal black, magenta. Fishnet stockings, tube socks and bandannas are optional. Protective pads, scabs and bruises are not.

It is difficult to see the words and symbols inked into exposed skin as the women whiz by. But you can’t miss the determination etched in hard-set jaws, narrowed eyes and exertion-red faces.
