NEW YORK (AP) -- The parent of the Philip Morris cigarette companies said Tuesday it will close a North Carolina manufacturing plant that employs 2,500 people as it moves cigarette production for non-U.S. markets to Europe. The announcement by Altria Group Inc. makes its U.S. and international cigarette units more independent. NEW YORK (AP) - Cigarette maker Altria Group says it will close a North Carolina plant that employs some 2,500 people as it moves cigarette production for non-US markets to Europe.
Altria's Philip Morris USA unit will close the plant and consolidate manufacturing for the US market by 2010.
The company says most hourly employees and many salaried employees will be offered jobs in Richmond, Virginia, while others will be eligible for severance.

COLONA, Ill. --An Iowa couple was killed Monday when a small antique plane bound for an air show in North Carolina crashed in northwestern Illinois, authorities said.
Henry County Coroner David Johnson said John and Sheri Horn, both 53 of Cedar Falls, Iowa, were killed when the single-engine plane John Horn was piloting crashed in a soybean field north of Colona.
Johnson said the couple were antique aircraft buffs and were flying the 60-year-old Navion from Waterloo, Iowa, to an air show in Southport, N.C. The cause of the crash was not determined Monday, but Johnson noted the area had been foggy at the time of the crash.
