Patricia Schultz's first book, "1,000 Places to See Before You Die,'' was grand entertainment for armchair travelers. It's unlikely that many people read the book, then ran off to raft the Mangoky River in Madagascar or bask on the beaches of Bora Bora. But she let us dream about it.
Her current book, however, is about places to which people might actually go - and about places they know.
"The first thing people look at is their home state,'' Schultz says. "That creates a gauge: 'If she did good with New Hampshire, chances are she got the other 49 right.' ''

Many Arctic plant species have readily adjusted to big climate changes, repeatedly recolonizing the rugged islands of Norway's remote Svalbard archipelago through 20,000 years of warm and cool spells since the frigid peak of the last ice age, researchers say.
The finding implies the plants may be able to shift long distances, following the climate conditions for which they are best adapted as those conditions change because of human-caused global warming, the researchers and some independent experts said.
Experts on climate and biology, who were not associated with the study, said it provides a glimmer of optimism in the face of generally bleak scientific assessments of the vulnerability of ecosystems to the atmospheric buildup of greenhouse gases.

MARQUETTE -- Three priests are retiring from active ministry and others are changing assignments under clergy changes announced recently by Bishop Alexander K. Sample of the Catholic Diocese of Marquette.
Some of the changes affect parishes in the Western Upper Peninsula.
--The Rev. James Roetzer will be relieved as pastor of St. Sebastian Parish in Bessemer, Immaculate Conception Parish in Wakefield and St. Catherine Mission in Marenisco.

Very little in life stays the same for a decade, let alone 50 years.
In 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, which catapulted that nation into the lead in the space race; U.S. population topped 171 million; and the price of a first-class stamp was 3 cents.
Closer to home, a small restaurant opened in 1957 on the corner of Mission and Bellows streets in Mt. Pleasant.
