Opera diva Dame Kiri's knickersgate

Thursday, March 22, 2007

SYDNEY, Australia — Opera diva Dame Kiri Te Kanawa prevailed Wednesday in a lawsuit that sought damages from her because she had canceled appearances with an Australian pop singer after learning women threw their underwear at him on stage.

The New South Wales state Supreme Court dismissed the $1.5 million suit, brought by promotion company Leading Edge after planned concerts in 2005 with John Farnham, 57, known in Australia as "The Voice," fell through.

Judge Patricia Bergin found there was no binding contract but ordered Te Kanawa's company to pay $102,000 in costs.

Lingerie thefts going unpunished

Thursday, March 22, 2007

Perhaps it?s Victoria?s secret. Not that any regular-sized woman can?t fit into their clothes, but that store thieves go unpunished by the famous lingerie chain, according to Daly City police officials.

On March 16, a store manager reported at 5:15 p.m. that 150 pairs of panties worth $1,125 collectively were stolen from a drawer in the store.

But the reporting of the incident is generally where it ends for Victoria?s Secret, according to Daly City police. If the police do catch somebody, the company generally just wants its merchandise back and is done with the process without pressing charges, Daly City police said.

Movie review: Lost in the lust

Thursday, March 22, 2007

Chris Rock's direction of "I Think I Love My Wife" isn't especially noteworthy. His screenwriting (with comedian Louis C.K.) is all over the map.

It's really only the casting that's on the money in this comedy based on Eric Rohmer's "Chloe in the Afternoon." Especially Rock's casting of himself as Richard Cooper, a married investment banker with an ogling problem.

Richard loves his schoolteacher wife, Brenda (Gina Torres), and two kids. But life in the suburbs sometimes bores him. It doesn't help that Brenda is more interested in home decorating than sex.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - We're going to talk about periods. Periods as in Aunt Ruby, the Monthly Thing, the Curse, Code Red, the Scarlet Seven, or just plain old menstruation, as your health teacher called it.

And we're going to talk about the products women use to deal with it, like the pads and tampons your mom used, and the cups and sponges she's probably never heard of.

Most women who've been menstruating for a while have a routine - there's a brand they rely on, a certain winged pad, a favored tampon absorbency. They have confidence in their products and see no reason to change.

Texas juvenile facilities ruled by fear

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

DALLAS - When an inmate at a state juvenile prison complained of an administrator's sexual advances, swift and merciless punishment followed: The teenager was thrown into an isolation cell "and put in shackles for over 13 hours," a Texas Rangers report revealed.

That 2004 incident at the West Texas State School, however extreme, embodies the culture of retaliation that permeates the Texas Youth Commission. It's an agency where fear and intimidation rule, inmates and employees have told The Dallas Morning News.

As lawmakers and the governor dismantle and investigate the scandal-wracked agency that runs the state's juvenile prisons, bitter inmates and employees emerge with accounts of institutionalized vengeance. Retributive violence against youth is ignored or covered up, they say. Incident reports, logbook pages, photographs and other evidence of abuse disappear.

Walking in a winter wonderland

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Today snowshoes are used mostly for recreation. There are snowshoe trails in all of the Western states offering trips of as little as 1 mile and as long as 10 miles.

For example, in Washington, the Gold Creek SnoPark is located 1 mile north of I-90's Exit 54 at the north end of Keechelus Lake. The park is at an elevation of 2,560 feet and has 200 spaces. There is a dog sled area, trails for snowshoers and a family snow play area. A family could spend several hours participating in different winter sports on the same day.

In California, the Meeks Creek Cross-Country Ski Trail is considered an easy trail beginning at 6,250-foot elevation. The length of the loop is 3.5 miles. Although this is a ski trail, snowshoeing is permitted.

Test that throws curves gets screwball answers

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

As FCAT winds down (or wraps up, depending on whether you're down on tests or up on them) for the season, I can only imagine some ridiculous, and/or desperate, answers that popped into students' minds as they beheld confounding questions.

And I can identify with them, even as I still try to emerge from my cocoon of a 12-year-old's maturity level into the butterfly existence of a fiftysomething. OK, so it was a lifetime ago when I was sweating over the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, which I don't think we should have had to take in Nebraska. That also was eons before No Child Left Behind, but I'd have liked to have been left behind instead of taking that battery of tests.

On the other hand, it wasn't all that long ago that I was puzzling over a few names on the people identification section of my copy-editing test. And I recall some smart-aleck answers I gave to questions I couldn't fathom, although I can't repeat them here. Smart-alecky answers are a braggadocial way to obfuscate one's ignorance, or to try to project a confident, humorous, persona to win over others.

The dilemma of wandering wildlife

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Nothing else will get a controversy going like wildlife being somewhere where it should not ? especially if it?s in conflict with the safety and welfare of Homo sapiens.

Moose that wander into town in Canada, Maine, Alaska, and other places are a case in point. They sometimes jump into the windshields of cars, run through people?s backyards carrying off clotheslines and underwear, kick or gore people?s pets and even run into trains. However, people love them anyway.

A coyote wandering through someone?s back yard with the sun highlighting his jaunty tail can be a moment of beauty to one person, while to another it represents death to a pet lamb.

Not a pretty story: Eating disorders feast on men, too

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

ON THE surface, Ron Saxen's rise from chunky teen to hunky male model was the stuff of dreams. But the story Saxen uncovers in his just-published memoir, "The Good Eater," (New Harbinger, $24.95) is something quite different — a tale of binge eating and starvation diets that nearly ruined him.

Looking at him now — an elegant, fit 44-year-old in khaki pants and black shirt, lounging with his wife at their Berkeley Hills home — Saxen seems the very picture of health. It's hard to believe this former model, stand-up comic and cigar and candy salesman spent more than a decade battling 15,000-calorie binges with crystal meth, drastic diets and exercise regimens so obsessive that he spent four hours a day running, weightifting or swimming.

Just two weeks after publication, "The Good Eater" is already in its second printing, copies are flying off shelves and CNN and "Good Morning America" have come calling.

I am fed up with the constant stream of bra and underwear ads placed front and center in my reading material. Today there was nearly a half-page ad in the A section of a woman wearing only a bra. It was yet another "in your face."

The DNA tests found genetic material from several men on the 28-year-old accuser's underwear and body, but none from any of the players.

Festivities herald coming of spring

Monday, March 19, 2007

Spring is just days away, with signs of the seasonal change all around us. Nature certainly is doing its part around town; the hills have finally turned a lush, lovely green and the trees are covered with blossoms. Dark, heavy jackets are being replaced with lighter garments; local merchants have set out bright spring flowers for us to add to our gardens, and with daylight-saving time, more residents are out taking evening strolls.

Even without these obvious changes, I'd know the season is about to shift, because the temperature complaints that fly around my daily conversations now have different sources. I should explain. My two closest friends have very different internal thermostats. One friend hates cold weather, delighting in triple digit temperature readings. Our perspectives are quite different.

She thinks Palm Springs; I think hell. She can't wait for July and looks forward to poolside afternoons; I visualize myself melting.

The 29-year-old floor installer was drinking coffee in his garage on Kite Court shortly after 6 a.m. when he heard an engine start, said California Highway Patrol Officer Kirk Durbin.

"He recognized immediately it was his own," Durbin said.

"Hey, Richard," his friend called out much louder than necessary across the locker room.

Out of the Past: 'Depression Cabbage:' Dancing the night away

Monday, March 19, 2007

We loaded our belongings, including Loafer, and headed to town where we would live, not with Vel's parents, but in back of the property, in the loom shed.We stopped at Carson's on our way to Kelliher. Carson and Ina invited us to a dance at the Edmonson's home, some five miles across the swamp. We went in the “sleigh,” a lightweight version of the sled, used for lighter hauling. It was a brightly painted narrow runnered vehicle equipped with two buggy seats - a sor...

Pushing himself

Monday, March 19, 2007

He is driving on Interstate-15 in Salt Lake City. His exit is coming up fast.

His delivery truck is filled with boxes he has just loaded at the airport. Since his job requires him to hop out of the truck to unload at each stop, he hasn't strapped on his seat belt.

Ryan Nichols, who grew up in Fullerton, is 21 on this overcast Saturday. It's May 22, 1993, a big day for him. His wedding invitations have just been mailed. His life is on the right track Mormon mission, college (he had only one B on his most recent report card), then marriage, then fatherhood. It's all happening just as he planned.

Theres a person inside the punchline

Monday, March 19, 2007

For some reason, that picture sticks in my head. The one of Britney Spears attacking a car with an umbrella.

Go ahead and laugh if you want. I wont blame you.

Still, the picture - it was all over the news recently - stops me. There she is, this pop princess, newly bald, dressed unglamorously in shorts and sweatshirt, rearing back with an umbrella, ready to give that car what it has coming. Supposedly, the vehicle belongs to a photographer who had been tailing her.

Some photos in online dating profiles make for shutter shudders

Sunday, March 18, 2007

In the world of cyber dating, there are the standard headshots, and then there are the ... bare-chested bachelor posing in front of a Camaro, or holding a fish or a (insert sports equipment here).

They have provided stand-up comedians a reservoir of material, spurred on parlor games and have become part a conversation piece at girls' nights out.

We are talking about the cheesy glamour portraits, beefcake shots and half-baked pictures. You know, the wedding picture with the significant other cropped out, all except for the hand. Or the puckered lips, hands behind the head pose that looks more like a "Saturday Night Live" parody of a Calvin Klein underwear ad.

Picture book lays out swingers who put the "oooo's" in smooth

Sunday, March 18, 2007

I'll give it to you straight, foxy mama, because that's the only way I roll:

One day a cat's got his shirt unbuttoned to the waist to display a magnificent chest-forest, accentuated by an eye-catching medallion. The next day he's in a book like Richard Jarman's "Smooth Operators" (Universe, $16.95).

It's the kind of awe-inspiring picture book — similar to 2002's "Bad Hair" — that'll either start conversations or bring them to an awkward halt. If you ever wore a pair of zip-up swim trunks, or if you are former baseball star Jim Palmer, it would be a halt. Palmer's infamously hirsute underwear ad is one of dozens from the '70s and '80s that British author Jarman compiled, adding extra volume with his hilarious commentary.
